TV pundit watch 2009/10

by Jerry St Clair » 23 Aug 2009 13:46

Cracking exchange on MOTD last night:

LIneker: "How do you think Wolves will fare this season Alan?"
Hansen: "I think they'll be alright"
Shearer: "Yeah, they'll be there or thereabouts at the bottom, but will be ok".

Thanks for that blinding insight, gentlemen. When ITV had the Premiership I expected this kind of banal drivel, but I demand better from the BBC. Is there any danger of this Old Boys Club being broken up, and some actual journalists being brought in to provide some analysis?

I haven't had the pleasure of listening to Claridge yet, but expect some gems from him as the season progresses.

I've not seen Claridge yet, but apparently he's been okay on the FL show.

EDIT: Apologies, that offers absolutely nothing to the discussion.

I feel a bit sorry for Claridge on that show. He keeps been served up ridiculous questions by that mug of a presenter, and as a result can't really offer any real insight.

I'm sure he'd say the same about you...apart from the hair, of course.

Do you really need insight in a show that has to pack in every single league goal?

I'd far rather bin the "insight" and the frankly rediculous email section in favour of a few more reports and action from the feckin' grounds. Is that not what a show like that is supposed to be about.

SKY+ has rendered the pundit useless but has dramatically reduced the total watch time of MOTD from 60 to 40 minutes.

pretty much every pundit has a pointless job, and I am sure they get paid very well for it too.

Stating the obvious while throwing in a few cliche's hardly improves the viewers experience. It's odd though as I am sure the presenters, editors, TV company owners etc all know this, yet they feel they have to carry on.

Not IMO, but if they insist on having a 2-minute discussion after every clip then they could at least make it interesting.

And you're right, the e-mail section is shockingly bad.

Get rid of that email bit. It's pathetic.

Anyone who emails in on a Saturday night should be shot for a start.

you would think, growing up watching English football, that any punditry on the game, by its very nature has to be banal and cliched but having lived in Spain and Italy they have some great footy analysis shows with real analysis, not just trite utterances and predictable nonsense, SO IT IS POSSIBLE TO ANALYSE FOOTBALL IN AN INTELLIGENT INSIGHTFUL WAY, however it's not part of the culture here to do it, nor do any of the tv pundits have either the potential or are encouraged by the tv format to do so.

It's like the Beeb want to turn the FL Show into a Radio show format which just doesn't work. Even Jacqui Oatley's tits aren't enough to want me to keep it. Let's have more commentary at selected games throughout the country and some key highlights please, not some bird reading a sheet of paper! And the opening and closing credit music is sh*t as well.

Steve Claridge isn't that bad to be honest, he talks a bit of sense.
Alan Shearer is sh*t.
Hansen I think is ok because he offers some defensive insight, likewise Dixon.
Lawro is just God awful.

If she was naked I'd sky+ but probably still skip to see how Brentford got on.

Watching ESPN coverage of the 'Pool game, and I think Joe Royle may well hold claim to the worst pundit of all time title.
