Steve Claridge

by facaldaqui » 24 Sep 2009 11:40

Anyone else getting fed up with Steve Claridge's mannered contributions to the Football League Show? I didn't mind him on radio commentary, but here he makes a point of avoiding most of the direct questions Maniche asks him, as if he puts being part of the footballers and managers union above providing insightful comment. Also, he always talks while waving a pen about, as if he has just made notes there and then. I would prefer to believe that he reviewed the highlights earlier and made his notes before the show started. The director should tell him to put the bloody pen down. I think they'd be better off not using him every week, as he's depressing. I've got enough trouble staying awake until the Reading game as it is.

'greed, +1.

Easier to do that and just watch the Reading game.

Alternatively, go to BBC iplayer or BBC Sport webpage. I fell asleep last Saturday waiting for the Reading game, so I was able to see the highlights on the BBC sports webpage 3 days later.

The biggest LOL is how he writes notes down during the programme to refer to in his 5 second analysis.

The whole show is terrible.

The worst parts being when they read out emails from fans....

I think there are teething problems with the look of the show. The set is too cavernous and open, and having the woman read the emails in another, largely deserted, room just adds to that. Couches would be better than formal desks. The guy who does the location reports should be kept off camera as he's not photogenic, to say the least. I'm sure this will all improve with time, but for me something needs to be done about Claridge fast. He looks as if he's unhappy to be there, like a schoolboy forced to stay behind for French.

Agree with some of the negative points here.

It's like they're doing work in a deserted newsroom, like they couldn't afford anything else.

At least stick a couple of work-experience sprogs in the background to give it a 'busy' feel.

currist sake

what do you want?

A backdrop of Wembley, fans whingeing away.. outsounding the commentator, smells of alcoholic breath booing in your own front room, 95 minutes of each and every game?

You've drifted a bit facaldaqui

Steve Claridge is a bloke who never got paid what the stars of today got paid

he STILL plays and is cobbling together an honest crust presenting on a programme that is (by far) better than anything that any other (free to view)channel has aired.

Make the most of it, before $ky hi-jack it and want you to pay additionally for it.

With 30 plus matches to get through I want as little guff as possible from the studio and more time devoted to showing the actual football. A coupla featured matches perhaps with mebbe a brief post game interview then straight onto the next one.

Whilst I agre with the sentiment that the show's fine and Claridge is OK - he doesn't really still play and has retired.

He made a one-off apperance for Weymouth as a favour to the club to help boost the attendance for a game as they are desperate for money.

TV companies, Sky, Setanta and the BBC all rate Claridge as some sort of expert because he played for thousands of lower league teams.

Personally I think he is a poor pundit.

He had a management job at Millwall in 2005, appointed in the summer and was removed before the end of pre season. Says it all to me really.

Managerial record

Years Club Pld W D L Pts/game
2001-2002 Portsmouth 22 5 8 9 1.05
2003-2004 Weymouth - - - - -
2005 Millwall 0 0 0 0
