Chris Sutton in management

by Barry the bird boggler » 28 Sep 2009 15:56

From the BBC...

Lincoln City have appointed former Blackburn, Chelsea and Celtic striker Chris Sutton as their new manager.

The 36-year-old, who was capped once by England, succeeds Peter Jackson who was dismissed by the Imps at the beginning of September.

Sutton's assistant at Sincil Bank will be former West Ham defender Ian Pearce.

They will take charge on Wednesday, with caretaker boss Simon Clark staying in charge for Tuesday's League Two match at home to Notts County.

Sutton began his career at Norwich City, initially as a defender before converting to a striker.

He became the first £5m player in English football when he moved to Blackburn Rovers in 1994, and the following season formed the "SAS" strike partnership with Alan Shearer as Rovers won the Premiership title.

A single England cap followed in 1997 and in 1999 Sutton moved to Chelsea for £10m, before heading to Celtic the following season.

After six prolific years in Scotland Sutton returned to England, joining Birmingham and then Aston Villa before retiring in July 2007 with an eye injury.

Decent combo there, with Pearce. Not sure about Lincoln as a club though. They're very much a League 2 club and can't really see them beyond that any time soon, but he'll cut his teeth and hopefully make a positive impression.

A wealth of top flight and international experience. Both of whom have played under Kenny Dalglish for example, as well as other very good managers - you would hope they can take a lot from that.

No lolz. I meant reference Champs League. I know Sutton only has the one England cap. My poor form for say international when I meant european football.

But at no point have I said they'll be successful. But they're both very experienced and should have taken a lot from the managers they've played under, the standard of football they played at...

Yesterday's Observer Indeed some at City regard the recent improvement in Robinho's attitude and application as a direct result of some withering deconstructions from Bellamy, who harbours real ambitions of one day becoming a manager. "Now Craig's reached 30, he's decided he wants to become a coach," explains Hughes's coaching lieutenant, Eddie Niedzwiecki. "He's thinking seriously about going into the management side when he finishes playing and wants to know every little detail about the way we structure and organise everything."

It'll be interesting to see how he deals with the press considering he rarely gave interviews as a player. He didn't trust them, fairplay to that as a player, but you can't do that as a manager.

I'm sure they will put that to good use at Lincoln !!!

You'd have to say that Sutton's background is no sort of guarantee of success, ask John Barnes who has everything Sutton has and more yet seems unable to do anything as a manager..
