Stadium renaming

Following Newcastle's 'sportsdirect.com@St James' Park' naming, Chelsea have announced that they are looking for a sponsor to rename Stamford Bridge.

LOLz is all.

I don't understand the LOLz @ Chelsea here, it's not like they're a team with an history so why hold on the name of the ground with any fervour?

Also, generally speaking, what's the problem with selling naming rights to a stadium, if you need cash and some clown will always pay to sponsor anything just do it.

I see it as money for nothing, and don't overly see what all the uproar is about. Elm Park would have always been Elm Park to us, even if it had some local business or who ever sponsoring it. I'm led to believe there was once a tentative approach made to Reading regarding a possible sponsorship or the Madejski Stadium. It was believed to be from Vodafone, around 99/00, back when they were based in Wokingham. Pride before profit came to mind.

I can't see how Newcastle actually get anything out of it if Sports Direct is owned by Mike Ashley. It's just some free publicity for his company.

They're certainly not making anything at all - this season. He's done it as a tempter to sell it to someone else next year.

Germany has some crackers, which seems odd coming from the first country to refuse Dietrich Mateschitz the right to rename anything he wishes after Red Bull. Some far more significant stadiums than St James' have suffered, too -
Westfalenstadion (Borussia) became Signal Iduna Park
Volksparkstadion (HSV) - HSH Nordbank Arena
Frankenstadion (Nürnberg) - EasyCredit Stadion
though perhaps worst of all is the name which Leverkusen chose for the revamped Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion (which in itself isn't great, Haberland being a former chairman of parent company Bayer and one-time manager within the notorious IG Farben group), the sort of glorious pun only a German could love - BayArena.

For what it's worth I think Vodafone have always been based in Newbury.

I seem to recall a Vodafone next to Wokingham Town's old stadium? It overlooked a Burger King and the swimming pool. We're going back to 1996/8 when I seemingly last remember seeing them being there.

Head Office is in Newbury - there are branch and departmental/subordinate offices all over the place.
