MATCH FIXING

by soggy biscuit » 19 Nov 2009 20:42

Nov. 19 (Bloomberg) -- German police have arrested several people suspected of fixing matches in major soccer leagues in Europe.

Evidence from raids in Germany and other countries suggests the unidentified suspects may have bribed players, coaches, referees and officials in “high-ranking European leagues” to manipulate games and bet on those matches, prosecutors in the northwest German town of Bochum said in a statement.

The investigation, which is supported by European soccer governing body UEFA, has been going on since the beginning of the year. A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow in Bochum with officials of UEFA, which runs the Champions League and the Europa League, in attendance.

UEFA said in a statement it provided authorities with “detailed data on games and unusual betting patterns throughout Europe.” Prosecutor Bernd Bieniossek said his office had no comment before the press conference tomorrow.

will anything ever come of this?

Doubtful. Sepp Blatter has a huge broom and an even bigger carpet should it appear internationals are involved

If it's European matches then it's not Blatter's jurisdiction.

Good reason to cover up. It should be FIFA that gets investigated for fixing matches.
