Which keeper would you rather have?

by Starfish » 07 Dec 2009 16:13

A couple of years ago, there would not have been much question in many people's minds but with Given playing so well this season (and being given plenty of opportunity to do so, in fairness), I wonder if opinion has changed at all.

Commentators over the weekend stated that Cech hasn't been the same since his head injury. Strangely I felt a bit of guilt transfer by inference.

No contest, Given. And there are about 5 more I would rather have than Petr the hat. He has been massively average for 2 years now.

One Irishman benefits from the actions of another. Given.

Surely there's only a handfull of 'keepers in world football that you'd take over Shay Given?

Julio Cesar, Iker Casillas, Gianluigi Buffon, to name a few...

Given is a great shot-stopper but quite poor as a sweeper goalkeeper and is permanently stuck to his line, also is very poor at stopping pens despite what happened at the weekend, also doesn't command his area very well (maybe coz he is on the small side)
Having said all that the most important thing a goalkeeper is required to do is to stop shots and IMO he is probably the best in the world at this so having given the poll a lot of consideration I have decided to abstain based on the fact that the question doesn't provide enough parameters for me to give a thoughtful, considered and wholly accurate response, apologies

Keepers who we think of as commanding their area well typically play behind a pretty good defence. Given hasn't yet had that luxury.

Given by a mile - Cech's decision making is awful compared to what it used to be and he relies on size now. If he wasn't so tall, he'd struggle to make it in a top half Premiership side.

We're not talking about former best keepers. Otherwise we'd be saying we'd prefer Schemeichel.

Petr Cech is NOT the best 'keeper in the world. He was once, he isn't now.

Here is the former best 'keeper in the world being beaten in an important match. Enjoy 8)

The purchase of Shay Given was one of several very astute signings by Mark Hughes. Whilst Man City can splash the cash, Mark Hughes has bought very well. He has brought players in that have helped balance his squad - he has improved in key areas - GK - Given, Defence - Lescott,Midfield - Barry, Strike Force - Tevez, Adebayour. They will edge out either Arsenal or Liverpool for a top 4 place this season, gaining Champions league football next year, giving them more appeal to attract the world superstars that they covet.

Out of Peter Cech and Shay Given, I'd opt for Given, although Reina and Sorensen have had excellent seasons so far. (Sorensen is at prime goalkeeping age and if his form continues, I think you could see him playing for one of the big four this season or next.)
