Elmer Park I dislike several aspects of the way they present The Football League Show right from the CBBC style opening title sequence through to the bit at the end where the main presenter unprofessionally turns his back on the camera and is joined by the token bird for an exchange of ‘rhubard’ with Steve Claridge, assuming he is still awake at this stage. This seems to reveal that Manish seems to have several sticks of dynamite strapped to his backside thus raising hopes that he is planning to blow up the whole studio which hopefully would cause a rethink to the whole set up as well as providing the Beeb with a novel opening to an episode of Holby City ( why are their matches never shown by the way ? ).
In between the annoying beginning and end to the programme football occasionally breaks out but this fails to stir any enthusiasm in Steve Claridge. Steve seemingly knows his stuff on the subject of the Football League, which after all is the least you would expect from someone who has played for the majority of the Clubs who compete in it, but still manages to give the impression that far from enjoying this rather easy gig, he would much rather be activated by the red button sometime the following morning.
Then there is the irritation of the regular appearances of the posh bird who reads out a series of predictable texts and e-mails. Although she brings a hint of glamour to the show, her job could be covered by a rolling banner at the foot of the screen listing the winning Managers of the day and giving them a ‘big up’ from their fans and following this with a list of losing Managers with the words ‘has to go’ after each of their names. When the posh bird, who has made something of a backwards move from Newsround, though apparently with the same target audience, is away at a gymkhana or polo match she is replaced off the bench by poor old Jacqui Oatley, who managed the almost unheard of achievement during her brief spell on Match of the Day of uniting the fans of every Club who all shared the opinion that she really did ‘have to go’. Nonetheless, surely even she doesn’t deserve to be relegated to being the substitute bird passing on congratulations to Accrington Stanley for surviving another week.
Overall, since the programme seems to be aimed at people still eligible for the Kid for a Quid scheme, the BBC might as well go the extra mile and in the tradition of the Magic Roundabout get Manish to end the programme by saying ‘time for bed’. Come to think of it maybe he could start the programme by saying that. I don't think Mr Claridge would be too disappointed.
