Police at Liverpool game

by Sharpy » 04 Jan 2010 10:35

Okay as expected there were so Liverpool fans in home ends on Saturday, that was a given. Most kept quiet etc but some i believe started off a cuffufle in y26 in the second half. I think there was only two of them, but it caused quiet abit of a stir.
There were 20 or so plod down in the tunnel and all of them just stood there doing oxf*rd all and watching the match on the screen...this left the stewards (it took them about 5 mins to come up) to deal with the situation.

What exactly are the police there for? Are they only paid to deal with visiting fans? i couldn't believe my eyes....

There have to be clear lines of responsibility, and I suspect that the police will only intervene if they are requested to by stewards. That is absolutely right.

If there were only two Liverpool fans causing trouble, I'd expect the tangos to be more than capable of dealing with it.

Only one liverpool fan, was sat in front of me and started mouthing off to the Reading fan next to him. Which then resulted in a mass "oxf*rd" chant and him getting kicked out.

So who started the fight then? Couldn't see from the top of the stand over everyone else.

Spot on.

The Police will only get involved at the request of the Stadium authorities - unless they see a law being broken themselves, when it's at their discretion if they get involved.

I appreciate that this involves a bit of a potential overlap, but generally the Police are there to assist, and they have no jurisdiction whatsoever over enforcing ground regulations (e.g. which stand you sit in, or whether you stand/sit). Where they will get involved is if someone who is breaking ground regulations (e.g. "persistent standing") is refusing to comply with ground authorities (e.g. a steward or tango), or especially abusing them. At that point it's a potential public order matter and they will assist.

They'll also see that anything drink-related is most definitely their responsibility - each local CPS office has targets for number of banning orders as this is a world cup year, so they're arresting and trying to ban on even the smallest things!

You must be about 3-4 seats from me then.

a number in the home end were decked out in liverpool colours - so one has to wonder on the intelligence of stewards letting them into the home areas in the first place.

I've seen people leave the hotel, presumably having been in there several hours, before the doormen got there, taking off their anonymous fleeces to reveal away shirts and scarves in their pockets.

They deserve a shoeing just for wearing a fleece and replica kit.

Reading fans would never get away with that as their fleeces aren't anonymous.

Is it really that big a deal having away fans in the home end?? I don't get what all the fuss is about someone who has bought a ticket legitimately watching his team play another team??

No not at all, as long as they apply the golden rule.....shut the f11ck up when your team scores.

Have applied the practice at such fun places like Layer Road and Priestfield (twice)

How can you possibly tell when you see someone leaving a hotel after several hours that they are not a guest?

Saw a group of them walk through my section, all with LFC hats on. All the steward did was tell them to turn them inside out.
