Seal
Ian Royal Overrated doesn't mean not good.

I remember you spouting this rubbish in an earlier thread. I challenged you to justify it then but you didn't, so will ask again now.....

- How exactly is the best English player of his generation overated?

- Who is it who 'overrates' him?

- Just who is worthy of your praise?

Ignore him, Seal. Ian's not really a football person - he just doesn't get it.

Currently there is nobody English that is better than Rooney. I just wish he wasn't playing for Manure.

And who is good enough to play alongside him in the England team? Owen seems a former shadow of himself and we've got Heskey or Crouch playing alongside but they don't seem to score enough. The only other player I can think of is Defoe....

Had he played for any other English team he would not be as good as he is.

I can see the thinking behind that, and I think I agree with it to an extent because Fergie is such a good manager BUT, I do think we're seeing his current form because he's now being played in his proper position more and more.

The last few seasons Fergie messed him around and played him on the wing, or upfront on his own (more) which I do think held him back a bit. It certainly didn't help get the best out of him for England and I remember moaning about it on here a few times in the past.

Now that Ronaldo is out of the way and Tevez is nolonger there more of the emphasis is on Rooney to play through the middle and to dictate games. If he'd have been allowed to do that more over the last 3 seasons he might have hit these heights sooner and more often.

The opposite side of that arguement is that it's perhaps playing out of position that has helped him develop some parts of his game...who knows!

One thing for sure is that he really is that good though Ian. If you can't see that it just goes to show how little you really appreciate the game and how it's played.

If he's being over-rated when people say he's the best player in the Premier league at the moment, and in the top handful the world, where should he really sit in the 'Ian Royal ratings' ???

Ronaldo leaving may have made Manchester United a weaker side, but Rooney has come on again this season.
Very important player for England, anyone who cannot see that is blinkered.
It's very obvious.

Ronaldo leaving seems to have let the shackles off and he is now fullfilling his potential. Right now there isn't a better player in the country the goal against Arsenal was fantastic great run in to the box and a superb finish.

He's always been quick but seems to have got a yard of pace back this season. That run for the goal on Sunday was sensational - one of my favourite goals of the season without a doubt. Absolute desire & determination, combined with pure technical ability and awareness.

And still I await Ian Royal's response with eager anticipation....

He played upfront, on the right and on the left didn't he?

It wasn't so much just a position thing between the two that I was getting at though. It was more that Fergie would change the formation around to fit them all in, and of course Ronaldo being there just changed the way they played (or at least the way he allowed them to).

I've not seen them play the 4-5-1 as much this season as they did over the last few years, and if they have I think Rooney has played through the middle a lot more than on the wing which he's had to do lots over the last few years.

You could argue that all the games played out of posistion has made him a better player.

I love him....

ideally he'd get a slight strain of something like the calf which would rule him out for March or soemthing - so he can come back for the end of the season after a rest and hit the ground running at the WC

That was one of the best individual displays I have seen in a long time, summed up by Eboue falling over at his feet! What a give and go for the second goal; goal of the season so far and the cross-field diagonal pass to Nani in the second half was just out of this world.

I hope Rooney stays fit for SA, otherwise England are well and truly oxf*rd.
