Also saw that the ref that gave the Henry hand-ball had a bit of a mare in the Porto v Arsenal game.

It's all about 'ceremonial free kicks' which officials are trained on. Goal shouldn't have been given.

Yes, it absolutely should have been. Serves Arsenal right for standing around moaning.

Rubbish. Attacker can take a quick free kick should he wish.

Goalkeeper shouldn't have turned his back on play, defenders should have been awake.

I can see both views on this.......

- Keeper holds onto the ball to stop quick free kick = yellow card
- Keeper throws ball away to stop quick free kick = yellow card
- Defender stands on/infront the ball to stop the quick free kick = yellow card

The ref took the ball off the keeper and gave it to the Porto player before the rest of the Arsenal team could get back, for all they knew it wasn't backpass and were waiting up field for the ball.

However there is nothing in the rules to say you cant take a quick free kick unless the ref informs you to wait for the whistle. In my opinion NO free kick in or around the box should be allowed to be taken before the whistle....the play is dead and should be restarted by the ref. Its like a team winning a penalty and then quickly getting up to take it before the keeper has a chance to get into his goal.

Ref didn't take it from him, Fabianski threw it back as he retreated.

It's a silly goal to concede but requires both numptiness for Fabianski, Sol Campbell to walk away with his head in his hands and two Porto players to be on it.

Any one of those three not happening and its not a goal.

You'll only get a yellow for directly interfering so Fabianski could have run back slower, Campbell could have been awake, the other midfielder could have tracked Falcao's run. Its just an advert for playing to the whistle and being on the ball.

No he didn't - the ref asked for the ball and as said, if he didn't he would have got a yellow card.

The training the referee's are given around this type of incident states that it should not have been given.

I am not trying to claim to know the ins and outs of this but as I have stated numerous time on here I know someone personally that ref's at a high level and chat to him on a regular basis on different things that crop up. He LOLzed at this incident and said that free kick should not have been taken quickly due to it being classed as a 'ceremonial free kick' which is to do with a referee's involvment & positioning in the incident.

The main thing that stops this just being LOLz @ Campbell and Fabianski was for me that the ref didn't put his arm up for an indirect free kick until Porto had taken it, so he probably wasn't ready himself. Still, LOLz @ Fabianski and Campbell

BTW will this make Spacky spontaneously combust as on the one hand it's UEFA again deliberately stitching up an English club (sic) but on the other it's his arch nemesis Arsene Wenger on the recieving end of Platini's schemes

Plus the fact that its the same ref that gave the "Henry hand-of-god goal" against the ROI.

I have heard of these 'ceremonial free kicks' but the criteria are significantly different to what you're suggesting.

They were basically if there was a reason why play should be stopped (treatment, booking etc, ref wanting a word) or if the attacking team demanded it.

Taking the free kick when the attackers want is the default, as far as I knew.

Definite back pass, but the ref almost seemed to want Porto to take it quickly, there was a real urgency in his actions.

As well as Campbell and Fabianski, equal LOLZ at the Arsenal players strolling back (highlighted in the clip) at 0.3mph.

It was excellent refereeing, in keeping with the laws of the game and the spirit as well.

They can have no arguments about the goal imo. The Porto players were within their rights to take the freekick quickly and the Arsenal players should have been more awake to the play developing. Fabianski gave the ball to the ref then turned his back and Campbell was just standing there with his hands on his knees.

Didn't a similar thing happen to us in a 2-1 home defeat to Brighton (iirc), where Hahnemann picked up a pass from Murty, the Brighton forward took the ball from Hahnemann's hands, squared the ball for someone else to tap in?

Edit: found it, it was Brighton at home on 4th April 2003
On sixteen minutes the Royals conceded a bizarre goal. Hahnemann picked up the ball from a back pass. The referee gave a free kick. The Reading defence froze, Hahnamann tossed the ball away and turned his back on the game. Zamora eagerly grabbed the ball slid it to Booker who tucked it away before anyone could react.

Funny thing is, every Reading fan at the time argued that the goal should NOT have stood........ :?

I thought every Reading fans just went absolutely nuts at Hahnemann and blamed him for the goal?

FWIW all of this would be cleared up by making one simple rule - the free-kick is taken on the referee's whistle.

The infringement happened when Arsenal didn't have loads of players back so, subject to soggy's comments about some directive, I don't see why the attacking team should have to w8 to let the defending team get into a better position than they were in before the infringement.

It was smart work by Brooker and Zamora against us. Best perfomance from Brooker at the Madstad.
