Match Fixing

by Dirk Gently » 22 Feb 2010 12:57

I was at a meeting yesterday that included a presentation from Declan Hill, teh guy who wrote a book on Match Fixing.

Absolutely fascinating and scary stuff, and very real - I'll definitely be getting his book "The Fix" (no UK publisher, interestingly!) from Amazon

Gist of it was that Asian football has no integrity whatsoever so illegal syndicates are moving into Europe big-time, in various ways.

Looks like the Chinese, at least, are trying to do something about match fixing:

There was a game in the African Cup of nations which finished 4-4; apparantly with 10 mins to go, it was 4-1 and the draw was 1000/1...........

There was a game in the Premiership where one team (I think Spurs) were 3-0 up at half time at home. Odds on the away team winning 5-3 were about 1000/1.

There was a game in the FA Cup where one team (I think Spurs) were 3-0 up at half time at home. Odds on the away team winning 4-3 were about 1000/1.

There was another game in the Premiership where one team (I think Spurs) were 1-0 up at half time at home. Odds on the home team winning 9-1 were about 1000/1.

Spooky eh.

Every overseas tournament from age 16 upwards, women included, has fixers approaching the players - watch out for Ghana results because there's really good evidence that the majority of them have been bought off.

European referees overseas for CL games are regularly offered extremely expensive prostitutes.

And there's a match between Accrington & Morecombe which is under investigation - but that one was only discovered because the players themselves were stupid enough to lump money on it themselves. There are plenty more where they don't and no-one ever knows.

This month's WSC has a Harry Pearson feature on this, using Hill's book as a starting point. $500 apparently the price of a match for some Ghanaian players...

Mainly because of our draconian libel laws. There's an article in this month's Private Eye about it.
