I'm not so sure. I'd possibly go along with the train of thought that Utd wouldn't want to touch him with a barge pole because of his total lack of class.
Utd, for all their faults, have an enigma and class about them that is almost as important as the players in terms of creating and maintaining the aura of the club. They have also always played with a great swashbuckling attacking style. Jose just doesn't fit in with that.
I'm not sure it'll be a good career move for any top manager to follow Fergie either. Look what it did for Rodgers following Coppell, or O'Farrell and less so the Doc following Busby.
I can see Jose being a better fit at City or Liverpool where he can't do much worse and has a chance, as he did at Chelsea, to provide either clubs first League title for donkeys years. I'm sure that hero opportunity would appeal more to him.
