Beckham out of World Cup

by Gordons Cumming » 14 Mar 2010 22:47

Just heard on MOTD 2.

Achilles tendon tear. Unlikely to recover in time.

A shame he couldn't finish a great career on a high.

Great player.

A real shame, that will probably be the end of his international career. Brilliant player, will be missed in an England shirt.

Had the game on as it happened --non-contact injury, looked to be quite the innocuous thing at first, like maybe he just got his spikes snagged and twisted the ankle and no real big thang

Shame, really

Massive shame, nice bloke and still a decent option to have on the bench.

Could be the end of his career to be honest, 8 months out and he'll miss the entire MLS season. Don't know whether he wants to come back and give LA a full season or not, or just buy a team.

BBC Breakfasts specialist this morning said 8 months out. R5 said 4 months out. As I got to work R5 had a sports injury specialist on that said 6 weeks out.

I can only imagine SSN has gone into overdrive this morning

'Beckhams former postman sends his condolences and hopes he can make it back to full recovery' etc

Could mean an opening in the squad for Adam Johnson perhaps? One of the goals of the season yesterday and looked very impressive when he came on

If Rooney's out, just fold the country.

I said the same thing myself a few weeks ago.

Although Rooney has probably cut down the mileage a bit this season (he doesn't bother chasing down the full backs as often as before) the way he plays the game means he will be very fortunate to go through a season without picking up an injury that takes at last a few weeks to sort out. I don't think he's had one yet this season so it's gonna happen anytime soon.

Gerrard will also miss the World Cup through injury, but he won't be that much of a loss of course.

It would be worse for England to have both Gerrard and Lampard fit - the temptation to play the best midfield in the world might be too much.

Depends really on if Capello thinks Johnson's a better option than he already has. The reason Capello liked Beckham was because he offered something different to the other wingers i.e. his crossing ability.

One less issue to worry about for Mr Capello then.

Never going to be a starter but might have been handy for expeirence or just incase one of our younger/pacet wingers failed to deliver the goods expected.

I know there is some debate over Beckham because of the PR cirucs that follows him and I am sure he loves the attention but personally though whilst not always playing that well gave his all for England.

A chance for somebody else to become the next England hero...

Lets just hope Mr Rooney stays injury-free!!!!

I think it's good that Beckham won't be keeping anyone like Wright-phillips out of the world cup. He's over-rated, has only one good foot and that's about it.
