Britain's worst team end 40-game losing streak

by SLAMMED » 12 Apr 2010 15:00

AFC Aldermaston finally ended their 40-game losing streak - the worst in British football history - with a 1-1 draw against Warminster Town.

Puts our one home win in a season into perspective.

There is no way that is the worst losing streak.

... it really depends just how far down the League/Pyramid you wish to go.

Its a bit difficult as most of the current search engines don't regard football as existing below (or certainly before) the Premiership!
Closest I could get to a long run of defeats at that level was the 'Mackems' - twice recently hit the 20 straight defeats mark. 8)

Down below STEP06 of the NL Pyramid where AFC Aldermaston currently play (i.e thats the equivalent level to Wokingham, Henley, Newbury) there may well be a few sides who've gone a season and more without even a draw - trouble is a lot of these leagues may contain sides with a 0% record but County level divisions rarely have many more than about a dozen teams at each tier.

They'd have to have gone w/o so much as a point for almost two seasons.

Certainly AFC Aldermaston are said to have broken a record of sorts but no-one seems clear on just who had the record before.

The NL thread on here quotes the BBC news site from last week, which covered their 39th straight loss H v Downton - (which I attended - as did a BBC South Cameraman) It mentioned a team called 'Stockport' nearly breaking the record in 1996. Usual shoddy journo didn't say whose record it originally was!

It clearly can't be 'County' who were doing quite well in the mid-90s - but someone elsewhere has mused it might be a team called 'Stockport United' who presumably hail from some diddlywhack 'Manc Local league' - I've had a look around the normal lower level NL sites and they don't seem to exist under that name now.

If anyone posts a relevant update on the NL Forum I'll put it on here - but I can't be @rsed to trawl any deeper for a definitive answer - there is usually a 'Pointless' thread :? each season on the NL Forum, so I could start looking back through that to see who's done particularly badly for the last couple of seasons - but I doubt if there is a worse record than AFC Aldermaston in recent NL history.

UPDATE : Just read another NL Forum thread re worst GD - on there two possible candidates have emerged for a losing sequence as bad as Aldermaston's :-

Weston St Johns Somerset League Divison 2 1999-2000 P34 L34
- the previous season they only got 5 points - so they must be likely - but this is seriously low level only for the multi-lined Anorak  - ironically they must have picked up a bit afterwards cos they were until quite recently up in the Western Division One

Blidworth Welfare Northern Counties East Div One 1997/98 P28 L28

Aldermaston having gotten beaten for 33 consequetive games, got their first point of their season today...........and how close it was from being all three.

How Aldermaston have been Sydenham Wessex's whipping boys this season I will never know.......they actually looked pretty good.

The first half was pretty much a 50/50 affair, neither team trying anything much except for long balls and shots from distance.... (the best being Warminsters long range effort just before halftime...that was brilliantly saved by GK Ben Smith who had to back peddle so much that he collided with his own uprights so hard, that I thought neither would survive.).

HT 0-0

The second half was very much Aldermastons

A 1-0 lead was taken by the tricky #9 Abdul Ally after 65 minutes

The Linesman hampered the chance for the potential of a 2-0 lead with a very incorrect offside decision when Abdul was through once again shortly afterwards

The Warminster keeper, had to catch well from a #4 Sam Ampleford looping header after about 75 minutes.

As the game progressed (and an Aldermaston management person got sent to the pavillion), a succession of corners and some frenetic defending led to an Warminster equaliser in the last five minutes.

All in all, two teams playing a good hard game (like their lives depended on it).......very evenly matched on the day

A deserved point for Aldermaston whose celebrations were somewhat cut short by the equaliser..........but yet had the bragging rights in front of the media that were there taking photographs

Just heard a feature on them on Talksquawks Hawksbee and Jacobs show about an hour ago.

... according to my mate - the previous 'consecutive defeat' record was held by Notts County.

Two points to note here :-

i) he's quoting 'The Sun' from earlier this week, who'd also picked up on the story.
ii) he's not actually sure he remembers the team name correctly!

... besides - I looked up Notts County on the FCHD - and their records, even going back to the 1880s, don't contain any back to back seasons with sufficient losses for it to be feasible that they got anywhere near 40 in a row. :?
