Will we have money to spend in the summer?

by NR_Royal » 14 Apr 2010 14:55

So last year we lost Doyle, SHunt, Bikey, USA etc due to a combination of players wanting to leave and the fact that our creditors wanted their £11m or so back. That's understandable.

Now I believe we are due another £11-12m in parachute payments this summer, and surely we don't need to pay more loans off. Does this mean that we could see around £5-6m pumped into transfers in order to get us to push for promotion or will SJM state the usual "We have a great squad here" BS and tuck the money elsewhere?

Do you think its a good idea for us to spend fairly heavily this summer? I hope we can secure Bertrand, Griffin and Zurab for under £4m with maybe £2m to spend on a striker and a winger.

We wont see anything like £5-6m spent on transfers.

The whole restructuring of the books will no doubt have included the final 'chute payment due this summer. I'd expect a similar spending to last summer though, something like £2m made available.

We aren't due another parachute payment this summer, we've had our 2 already.

We will continue to reduce our wage bill this summer with likely out goings of Cisse, Matejovsky, Ivar and Bryn, as well as Mooney, Davies and Antonio. We will then be able to bring a few players in but i doubt we'll have anything over £500k to spend, if any. Free transfers and bargains, i'm quite happy with that. Griffin and Zurab are both on a free i think.

They are paid at the end of the season - this is the end of our SECOND season since relegation.

Why is it peoplenever considerthe wages when talking about buying players. You have just spent the £6m you said we shouldhave as a budget so where is the money to pay the wages of those players?

What we may have to payoff is going to depend on how the books have balanced this season. You'd hope with the crowds holding up well and the cup run things will be good, but we have no way of knowing what the plans were financially.

I can;t see we need to spend 5 or 6 million, and I doubt the club will break with tradition and announce a budget. McD will put his plans together and go to the board for support. I can see them being sympathetic if he asks for money for 3 or 4 new players (buy Betrand, bring in Zuba, new right back, extra forward)

I always go on the assumption that when people talk about a transfer budget it is purely for the fees and for the sake of discussion wages are budgeted elsewhere.

Historically RFC have worked differently. More than one manager has said that he has been allowed the freedomto use whatever money was made available as he saw fit. So if he was told he could spend £1 million on a player he could get a free transfer on a 2 year deal at 500k/ year or pay £500k for a player and pay him 250k for a two year deal.

I agree we tend to talk in short hand about transfers only but I also think many people forget that the cost of signing a player is way more than just what we pay up front (or in instalments !)

OK, so maybe £6m is an exaggeration. I hope we can pick up some good loans and frees, and with McDermott in charge, I'm sure we'll have no problem searching out great players.

I don't think anyone suggesting we sign player X is forgetting we have to pay them.

If we can afford to pay £2m for a player, and get him to sign, then the assumption would be that his wages fall within the clubs budgets. It really doesn't need every post saying we should sign X for £2m and then add on the 'and pay him £10k out of our wages budget' does it?

We've already trimmed our wage bill significantly since we got relegated through both contracted wage decreases and by selling off the higher earners. I'd imagine we'll still be in the top half of payers next season, so almost any player willing to play in the Championship should be within our sights really (some obvious exceptions where other clubs break the bank to get the likes of Beattie - who is one I'd love us to sign by the way!).

Hope Madejski can offer some cash for next season. £2-3 million should do it IMO. He supported Rogers earlier this season in the transfer market and hopefully he can do the same for McDermott next season. Question is whether McDermott will spend the money wisely.
