Police at Blackburn v Burnley

by Dirk Gently » 20 Apr 2010 16:00

Henry Porter One of the troubling developments in the past few years, is the number of times police have been captured on film lashing out at innocent demonstrators and football fans, neither of whom can rely on ready sympathy from the public, but who nevertheless have rights in a democracy.

Three weeks ago, the east Lancashire derby between Burnley and Blackburn Rovers took place in normally tense conditions, in which fans from both sides were isolated before and after the fixture at Burnley's ground, Turf Moor. Trouble after the match was reported in the media with Superintendant Terry Woods, of Lancashire police, issuing a standard statement about a few troublemakers. "Unfortunately we have had to deal with some disorder inside and outside the ground," he said. "However, the operation that is in place has enabled us to successfully deal with those pockets of disorder rapidly."

Yesterday, the Police State website publicised a video that shows shocking levels of violence by the police and which certainly puts a different slant on what actually happened after the game. Officers are seen wading into the crowd with batons flailing. It is only a 40-second video, but the fans did not appear to be presenting a violent threat ........

from the second video it kind of looks like the fans instigated it and the police finished it

I don't have a massive amount of sympathy.

The game was long over, the main stand in the background is completely empty which suggests that the Burnley fans in question had hung around for a long time afterwards. There are several Burnley fans seen jostling with police and a couple who break through the line. A couple of police get knocked over. Frankly, anyone who gets a whack with a truncheon in these circumstances has little to complain about.

Calm down everyone, I think we should all take the shorter video from the website called Police state as the gospel truth

I think that batting the same person several times is a bit harsh - especially as they were trying to leave, regardless of what happened beforehand. I don't think I would have stood for being twatted several times if I was trying to leave. But LOL @21 secs when the OB came out of nowhere and gave a limp wristed bat to that dudes back.

The dude at 21 seconds really is trying to do some damage though, look at him swinging.

LOL! Loved it.

Everyone talks about hooligans and unsavory incidents as " no one wants to see that", bla bla.

Everyone is thoroughly enjoying the watch and even the blackburn scarfers in the ground were having a good giggle while filming. Looks like fun had by all.

Funny that it is only once the OB start wading in that the Rovers lot start getting excited with plenty of arms out wide. Easy to be all that behond some sgregation and a line of Lancashire's finest :D
