The one that surprises me most is Ivanovic, but then I suppose he's been consistent and perhaps the only stand-out constant top-7 right-back; if Glen Johnson hadn't been injured for so long he may have got it. Fletcher is also quite surprising (ahead of Lampard for example), and possibly Vermaelen. I wonder if Hart's inclusion will affect Capello for the WC.

The most important thing to know about these awards is that the voting happens in February. So anything that's happened since then can be ignored.

looked a bit lost in the early part of the season imo, but has picked up massivelyin the last few months. Still a bizarre selection if the voting was all done by February.

Richard Dunne's been pretty immense - thought I saw a table with him top of blocks and near the top of tackles. Other than that 7-1 a few weeks back, Villa have been very impressive at the back.

Valencia's been solid - obviously not as flash as the Portugese Ronaldo but been knocking the crosses in.

Milner's been good all season but it still seems odd that he's Young Player, even if he is, indeed, still quite young.

wrt Ivanovic, its worth remembering he cost Chelsea about £10 million. You'd hope he'd turn out to be half-decent.

I like Joe Hart, but to say he's the best in the in the league.

On the subject of the PFA awards, there was a table booked at the awards dinner in the names of A Federici, M Mills, S Long, N Hunt, S Church and R Bertrand - but not one of them was there and the table was empty.

Hart probably got a bit of a patriotic vote to get in the side, but that Mail article even went as far as to suggest Cech above him. From everything I have seen of him this season he has been decidedly dodgy

Your disappointment is as nothing compared to the mewling that would have appeared on here if they'd gone for a jolly after Saturday's game!

The voting system for the PFA awards does seem flawed.

While the Football Writers’ Association try to make life simple for members by inviting them to vote online for the Footballer of the Year, to be announced on Thursday, the Professional Footballers’ Association still use pen and paper.

Each member is sent a ballot form shortly after Christmas to fill out and return before a date in March.

Given how many millionaire players now use their agents even to book cinema tickets, this image seems implausible, even if Wayne Bridge would have taken great delight in nominating Ricardo Carvalho and Alex ahead of John Terry as his centre halves.

But vote some of them did, arriving at a side that raised one or two eyebrows when it was revealed at a gala dinner in London on Sunday night.

The most astonishing omission was Frank Lampard, who failed to secure a berth in midfield when he has once again been the model professional.

Chelsea’s captain earlier in the day and scorer of two of the seven goals his team put past Stoke, Lampard is exactly the kind of player young professionals should aspire to be.

Consistently excellent and as sporting a footballer as we have seen in the Premier League, the England international should be among the first names on any team sheet.

Nobody can argue with Wayne Rooney’s nomination as the PFA Player of the Year and it is hard to make a case against Didier Drogba as his strike partner, even if Carlos Tevez has excelled for Manchester City
