First memory was 82, watching the Eng v France game on telly in Guernsey on a school trip.

Went to 98, all the England games plus a mega game between Iran & Yugoslavia, viewed from the Iran End. :| Paid a grand in cash for 4 tickets off a tout for England Argentina. Couldnt believe we paid it at the time, but worth every penny!

LOL moments:

Zaire showing how to defend a Brazil Free Kick in 74.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYDXkVGpMpc
Masing's foul on Cannigia in 90.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeRlJJbtdHc
The Battle of Santiago in 62. (David CoLOLeman)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOtL1m1o_ok

And Scotland.

First WC-related memory is being sent out with the women - who were sent away to go shopping so the men could watch the 66 final.

4 years later it was being caught in traffic coming back from a day out to Portsmouth and being late to watch the quarter-final in Leon - which as an 8-year-old I desperately, desperately, wanted to watch and it was so frustrating to be stuck - no radio in the car in those days, just a hand-held transistor set with crap recepetion.

Oh, and collecting these - wheich I still have on my office wall :

1990 was my first - remember Platt's goal, Cameroon and Germany semi

1994 was the first I followed and immersed myself in.

I remember Gazza scoring that amazing goal, but I had no idea what I was watching at the time.

First world cup I really remember was '98

Sounds like you still have no idea what your watching. Gazza never scored in the World Cup.

Stand out points for me:

Holland 1978 and the long range shooting
Argentina 1998 and the tickertape reception for the home side

Marco Tardelli after scoring in the 82 final. Best celebration ever!
Schumacher in the semi against France. HTF did he stay on???
The best world cup match I ever saw - Italy 3 Brazil 2
Anschluss

1990 I remember the Cameroon player finally nailing the left winger and waving to the crowd after he got the red.
Roger Milla

1994 was all about the Nigerians

I think you mean "have no idea what you were watching" and I don't because memories back then are a complete jumbled mess. I just know it was an england game and it's the earliest one I remember.

My first memory was 1998. Celebrating like mad when Sol Campbell's header hit the net....and then.

Michael Owen's goal against Argentina was a bit special.

Without question. We didn't deserve to lose that one. Still the most bitter world cup memory I remember. Maybe it's because I was young, or maybe it's because we were so poor in the 2nd half against Brazil in 2002 and the entire 2006 campaign that nobody could begrudge us dropping out.

'86 for the first and like Whore Jackie completed the sticker album.

My fav was probably '90 with that incredible first game and the Argie's getting a good dose of their own medicine from little old Cameroon and 50 year old Roger Milla.

1970 - about the only thing I remember of this was collecting the coin set that Dirk posted above.
1974 - I remember the sweaties mouthing off before hand about winning it, then losing to Peru
1978 - I remember being on a caravan holiday in the New Forest & watching a couple of scottish games on a very snowy black & white portable telly (can't actually remember which games though)
1982 - Keegan not being fit but taken anyway, going out having not scored enough, then Keegan coming on for about 10 minutes at the end of our last match in very tight shorts.
1986 - hand of god and all that but most clearly remember Lineker really maturing as a striker, but very nearly going out in the first round.
1990 - Roger Milla and his dance. A truly superb semi final against Germany that even had Ms TSOC engrossed and she really, really hates football

Folks on here only just remembering the 2002 world cup makes me feel postively ancient as it seems like just 5 minutes ago.

Already mentioned - Francois Oman Biyik's header going in off the legs of the Argie keeper iirc, at the San Siro, in the opening game, for a shock Cameroon win; and in the same game, Cannigia's Olympic hurdling before finally getting taken out.

Same World Cup, Roberto Baggio's brilliant individual goal against the Czechs (I think), and Platt's injury time volley against Belgium. I've got so many memories of Italia '90. The first World Cup I was old enough to appreciate. Mark Wright headed our only goal against Egypt, iirc. Voller and Rijkaard spitting at each other and getting sent off.

In the USA in 1994, Ray Houghton's delightful chip against Italy (iirc).

Actually, I think it was Rijkaard who was spitting into Voller's hair and Voller reacted by lashing out at him.
