Berks & Bucks Cup Entry?

by Stuffed Crust Pizza » 08 May 2010 21:04

If I remember correctly we ceased to enter our County FA's primary competition due to players picking up injuries against overzealous part-timers. However as the counties only professional club, I feel its our duty to give something back to grass-roots football in the area and give other teams the opportunity of a big pay day against a Reading XI. I'd certainly join any campaign to get us back in the competition as I look back on our mid-90's success at Adams Park with a nostalgic tear in my eye.

Come on Brian, get in touch with the FA and get us booked in! Perhaps we might even get our hands on some silverware...

Hell and why not?

We'll have a reserve team without a league to play in

and we have the youngsters who (with the help of one or two of our senior players) would benefit from competitive games against some of the local cloggers.

And I, for one, would look forward to visiting a few more non-league footballing outposts along the way.

I'd agree it would be good for us to enter, in fact it should be a matter of pride !

Although not sure it is right to say we are the only professional side in the county. The only football league side perhaps, or the only full timers, but there are loads of teams in Berkshire who pay their players to play and of course there are other pro teams within the B&B Fa area.

I'm fairly sure I'm right in saying that we are the only professional football club in Berkshire. All the others will either be part-time or amateur. The only other pro team in the B&B FA would be Wycombe Wanderers.

I stand corrected! Rather begrudginly I'd have to include MK Dons in the list of professional clubs affiliated to the B&B FA. However I will never recognise them personally.

We could really get deeply into pedantry here !

There are no distinctions between professional and amateur teams - any club can pay it's players. I don't know of any park sides that do but I do know of players in the Hellenic league who get paid to play.

Distinction must be between full and part timers. Most of the Conference are full timers these days (often getting paid more than Div 2 players !)

As i said originally though, your point is valid and as the Senior team in Berkshire (and Buckinghamshire !) we ought to be taking part in the County competitions in some shape or form.

Hmmm. I also seem to remember a deeply embarrassing afternoon out at Aylesbury.....

All the same, I'd love us to enter it again.

I certainly did ask him why we didn't enter, and he wasn't sure why. However he said he would definately look into re-entering because, as I pointed out to him, it was "only" 4 games and we could feasibly play a youthful reserve team in it, as well as players on the way back from injury. Just a couple of suggestions, and he definately said he would look into it.

I don't think we've ever retained a trophy in our history - that is win something 2 yrs running. Not even the B&B!

Apart from manager of the year which doesn't count.

Didn't we win the Premiership Reserve League (or was it the Cup ?) in successive seasons ?

Must check on the honours board at HQ !!

We are also early favourites to retain or Championship Family Club of the Year accolade, although obviously there will be stiff competition from Pompey.

I'm sure we won something twice !

Didn;t we win the Southern League then win the national playoff one year then retain the Southern title an dlose the national final ?

Or maybe I'm just way off !!!

We won the Southern League and national play-off final in our first season - we finished 3rd in the Southern League in our 2nd season.
