11 vs West Germany

[1] Peter SHILTON (GK)
[3] Stuart PEARCE
[5] Des WALKER
[6] Terry BUTCHER
[8] Chris WADDLE
[9] Peter BEARDSLEY
[10] Gary LINEKER
[12] Paul PARKER
[14] Mark WRIGHT
[17] David PLATT
[19] Paul GASCOIGNE

Rooney in for Beardsley? Lampard in for Platt (although that would be with a heavy heart)? Other than that I don't think that I would change the 1990 team.

EDIT A Cole in for Pearce as well, obviously.

PlasticRoyale The 1990 squad who would you like to see in the current squad - Shilton would be a defo, best English keeper ever, Des Walker, Robson, Barnes, Lineker, Gazza, Waddle

When you see it written down it doesn't look that good

Player DoB/Age Caps Club
1 GK Peter Shilton 18 September 1949 (aged 40) 118 Derby County
2 DF Gary Stevens 27 March 1963 (aged 27) 39 Rangers
3 DF Stuart Pearce 24 April 1962 (aged 28) 24 Nottingham Forest
4 MF Neil Webb 30 July 1962 (aged 27) 24 Manchester United
5 DF Des Walker 26 November 1965 (aged 24) 18 Nottingham Forest
6 DF Terry Butcher 28 December 1958 (aged 31) 72 Rangers
7 MF Bryan Robson (c) 11 January 1957 (aged 33) 85 Manchester United
8 MF Chris Waddle 14 December 1960 (aged 29) 52 Marseille
9 FW Peter Beardsley 18 January 1961 (aged 29) 40 Liverpool
10 FW Gary Lineker 30 November 1960 (aged 29) 51 Tottenham Hotspur
11 MF John Barnes 7 November 1963 (aged 26) 53 Liverpool
12 DF Paul Parker 4 April 1964 (aged 26) 5 Queens Park Rangers
13 GK Chris Woods 14 November 1959 (aged 30) 16 Rangers
14 DF Mark Wright 1 August 1963 (aged 26) 24 Derby County
15 DF Tony Dorigo 31 December 1965 (aged 24) 3 Chelsea
16 MF Steve McMahon 20 August 1961 (aged 28) 12 Liverpool
17 MF David Platt 10 June 1966 (aged 23) 5 Aston Villa
18 MF Steve Hodge 25 October 1962 (aged 27) 22 Nottingham Forest
19 MF Paul Gascoigne 27 May 1967 (aged 23) 11 Tottenham Hotspur
20 MF Trevor Steven 21 September 1963 (aged 26) 26 Rangers
21 FW Steve Bull 28 March 1965 (aged 25) 7 Wolverhampton Wanderers
*22 GK Dave Beasant

I still can't quite believe Tony Dorigo made that squad. I can remember the sinking feeling every time he got thrown on as sub "how the fcuk is that gonna help?"

Not sure about this Baines led nostalgia over the 1990 team. Are people forgetting we were essentially pretty rubbish and incredibly lucky to reach the semis?

We scraped through our group with 1 win courtesy of a 1-0 set piece victory over EGYPT.

We then fluked past Belgium with a last min winner after they dominated. BELGUIM.

This was followed by diving our way past Cameroon.

Finishing off with our ONE good performance. When we still went out to Germany.

Don't get me wrong it was an epic semi final, and I loved Gascoigne, Waddle, Lineker, Beardo & Platt. But we played 5 at the back and really weren't that good.

We had a series of close matches in which we did enough, until we came up against the Germans and didn't quite do enough (their goal was also pretty lucky).

Also, I was comparing the 1990 team to the current team, so they're bound to look good by comparison.

It's hard to compare teams due to diff formations, but if we assumed a good old fashioned 4-4-2.

Shilton
A. Cole
Walker
Terry
Parker
Waddle
Lampard
Gascoigne
Gerrard
Rooney
Lineker

You can probably debate that a bit, but in essence it's going to be a relatively even 50:50 split.

Also bear in mind a lot of those players came of age at that World Cup, so probably unfair to make the comparison until this one is over.

I'd love to see your midfield play! (I'd hate to be part of a 4 man defence behind it.)

If we were playing 4 4 2, I'd probably prefer Butcher over John Terry, but perhaps there isn't a great deal in it.

Agreed it wouldn't work on paper (needs a defensive midfielder), but you get the gist!

As I say, let's reserve judgement until after the World Cup...

readingbedding 2002, was a good start.

England 1-1 Sweden :|

Knocked Argentina out, we started well and demolished Denmark, only to go out with a whimper.
Lucio stumble, Owen tucks it in, here we go...then nothing
We were watching it at 7am, it was as if they had their bare feet rapped with hoses and demanded to play at 7am.

Doesn't matter, Owen scoring wasn't at the start of the tournament was it? :|

I think that for a lot of people, Italia 90 was their first proper WC where they were able to go down the pub and watch the games etc so will always hold a nostalgic place for people

Serious? The three centre backs (italic) were all monsters. So much so that Tony Adams didn't get into the squad.
Lineker was one of the best strikers in Europe. Waddle was one of the best wingers in Europe.
Platt and Gascoigne coming through.

Yeah, there's some odd choices to build up the squad (Steve Bull was meant to be signing for Aston Villa that summer, I've read somewhere) but the core is actually superb. Also - players that had played abroad giving the side a bit of extra nous = not a bad thing.

Belgium had finished 4th in the previous World Cup and had some genuinely classy players - the keeper, Scifo.
Just because they're pish now, doesn't mean that they were always pish.

Michel Preudhomme was the keeper. Jan Cuelemanns (sp) was also a big player for them. Likewise Marc DeGriyse and Frankie Van Der Elst.

Anyways, it's tournament football and we only lost one game from 6 and that was on penalties. So there.

Cameroon was memorable, as was the Belgian game, as was the Dutch game.
Guess you had to have been there or not a teenager etc, etc.

Platt's winner against Belgium will probably always be in my 'top 10 football moments'. Absolutely sublime.
