2010 World Cup Match 1 South Africa v Mexico OFFICIAL THREAD

by bobbybottler » 10 Jun 2010 22:19

Just setting a few rules regarding thread titles:
1) Need to mention match number and both teams
2) If it's the OFFICIAL THREAD it needs to say so
3) Add as much data as space allows - this might be a match thread for a different world cup so it's best to make it clear for everyone's benefit.

OK?

South Africa are shite. Mexico looked useful against England. If this wasn't the opener I might have skipped it but as it is the opener, I'm in.

1 - 1 draw.

I've got eighty notes on South Africa to finish bottom of the group, so 1-0 to Mexico.

Good match in one of the more intriguing groups of the tournament. The Bafana Bafana go in with a boisterous home support and the pressure hanging over that no host nation has never not made it past the group stage, while Mexico will feel this is a winnable game.

I'm convinced South Africa will make it past the group stage. Host nations get the feel good factor and it becomes a difficult task for the opposition. Going for a 2-1 win to South Africa

1-1

Mexico struggle away from home soil and historically do not handle pressure that well. South Africa is possibly a must win game for them. Opening games are usually cagey matches that can throw up the odd upset so a game against the hosts, who are in reasonable if unspectacular form is no easy task in front of a noisy and passionate home crowd.

I think South Africa will struggle to qualify from the group but they by no means whipping boys and will want to put on a show to prove themselves worthy hosts. They will fancy their chances of picking up something from all their games. Results against them could decide who goes through.

As on the main thread, South Africa are unbeaten in 15 games, and are probably better than their standing suggests; but Mexico play a decent brand of football and should have enough to beat the hosts.

2-0 Mexico.

Looking forward to seeing Vela play for his country (should he start). Also Marquez has huge amounts of experience. I just can't see South Africa losing in their first game.

Score draw imho.

Anyway, have a feeling South Africa might sneak this. Opening games in group stages can be on the side of caution as teams don't want to lose.

Stat attack, courtesy of the BBC:

- No World Cup host has ever gone out in the opening round.
- No home nation has lost when playing in the World Cup's curtain-raiser.
- This is the 5th time Mexico has played in the opening game of a World Cup, and they have yet to win (1 draw and 3 defeats).
