Do Africans genuinely support other African teams?

I want hard evidence. Surely they must have had some pretty major rows over the years the way we have had in Europe

Was saying this last night - total nonsense to assume an entire continent pulls together behind Ghana any more than us and the French want the Germans to win anything.

I am sure that some countries will hate others, but I'm also sure that African people see Africa as a unity of people and the majority of South Africans for example would cheer on Ghana.

I'm sure.

Really.

But the most recent amongst a neverending string of honky-projected stereotypes

^^^ What NR_Royal said.

I'm sure African fans can see benefits accruing to them if at least one African team goes well in this World Cup.

Do they want them to win? Probably not!

From my experience of African football- they are incredibly passionate, and the bit of Africa I know will have been behind the other teams- they are less defined by political boundary loyalties than we. Senegalese will have Nigerian roots maybe...but they will have started behind a team- yet at the same time knowing that for any African team to do well, it is positive for the whole continent. Kind of nice for the world to see it isn't all poverty and starvation. Plus, it is a great excuse for a party.

That is not to say there are obviously conflicts between some countries (often more tribal than national), how those nations react, I cannot be sure. I know my little corner of Africa quite well, but know little about the rest. Similarly I know the UK quite well, but know bugger all about Slovakia for example.

I think Ghana would now be most African's 2nd team for the QFs while they glibly continue to support which ever team is left that has most Chelsea/Arsenal/Man U/Barcelona players in it

Having been in South Africa when this match took place I can confirm that everyone there treated Ghana like their own team. They were referred to by South Africans as Ba-Ghana Ba-Ghana and they went properly nuts for them.

Over here there was a lot of interest in how both Japan and South Korea were doing (also North Korea but that's a little different). The fact that both made in to the knock-out round was greeted in a positive manner by pretty much everyone (Show the world what an Asian can do, etc, etc). But; there is absolutely no way that Chinese people would have wanted either to actually win it: they hate them far too much for that to EVER happen!
