CMRoyal
The Prisoner The worst thing about today is that I don't feel anything.

Fans need to relate to what happens on the pitch. Nobody likes to lose, but we can all accept it if we try hard and make an effort. I suspect that very few fans are angry about going out tonight - they will be more confused about a new disaffected feeling of having spent time and money to watch something they don't understand and cannot relate to.

Another +1

Is it just my impression or is it that (media apart) just about the only people who get really excited about England's chances are those who don't otherwise really follow football much? The rest of us have become far too cynical for that these days.

I wouldn't go that far.
Certainly, those who watch football regularly knew we were not going to win the competition. There are better sides out there than England. As one who thinks this way, I'm not at all surprised we got eliminated: but I also have a sense of being short changed. It's not just about the result against Germany, it's the manner of what has unfolded in South Africa.
The New Zealanders were eliminated (just) before us, but at least their players can look Kiwi fans in the eye, safe in the knowledge that those fans saw that they gave it a right bash. We got nothing of the sort, and that's what leves the bad taste in my mouth.

Royal Lady As for Fat Frank exchanging shirts and smiling away and chatting with Schweinsteiger I think it was - wtf. Firstly, why would you want a German's shirt as a reminder of possibly one of the shittest performances ever given by England and secondly, how about a bit of humility and thought for the thousands of people who spent a fortune to go and watch that shower of shit.

I usually agree with a lot of your posts but not this one. I thought the opposite. Seemed a genuine chat from two of europes best midfielders and its nice to see sportsmanship and respect between the two I also did think I wonder if they'll be club team mates next year. Also most of the german comments seemed pretty fair after the game. Lampard had a decent game also, not great but will always be remembered for the goal that never was.

Bobby Moore will be turning in his grave tonight.

He must have dropped a bollock like Upson and Terry did last night.

Oh.

LOL at being from such a tinpot nation that the only enjoyment you can get from a World Cup is watching others fail. We were oxf*rd shit and still made it to the the 2nd round, the Scots didn't even get through qualifying. Scotland the lolz are still pretty firmly aimed in your direction.

A few day- after thoughts.
Capello appears to be a disciplinarian and a bit dull (don't forget he got sacked by Real Madrid for playing dull football) which might be o.k when it's the case of a few days together for the qualifiers but when you are together for 40 odd days it's different, just like you might share a few beers with somebody but would you choose to go on holiday with them?
These players are used to the star treatment wherever they go with people fawning all over them so it was probably a shock to their systems when they were told what to do for 40 odd days.

Capello may have thought that the players had some football intelligence of their own but clearly they haven't because when asked to play a bit differently from what they do week-in week -out they can't.Unlike the Dutch for example our players just aren't flexible and Capello really ought to have known that.
Also he has never managed at a major tournament and the whole thing is different from managing at club level.

Having said that about the manager what about the players?
I'm sure they believe the hype-pictures of Rooney daubed in a St George's cross and picked out as a star along with Messi (a real star) and a few others for advertising purposes may have made him feel as though he just had to turn up.
Also Terry,Lampard and A Cole are used to shagging in the afternoons when they are in England, not making small talk with their England team-mates or playing computer games.

Sitting watching that yesterday with mainly non-football people they couldn't believe what they were seeing-weren't we supposed to be contenders after beating the might of Slovenia and like Beckham before him isn't Rooney supposed to be a world star, somebody who would perform major feats at world finals when in fact like Beckham before him he is really an imposter, built up way beyond his ability by the English Press?
Watching Milner supposedly worth £25,000,000,if so what price Ozil?
Joe Cole-the player that so many on here and elsewhere were calling for to answer all of our prayers and a player that Arsenal,Man Utd and Liverpool are supposedly desperate to pay over the £100,000 per week that Chelsea realised wasn't worth paying now that he is fat, slow and more of a diver even than Fat Frank or Rooney.

This is what gets to people doing run-of-the-mill jobs-how can these people (including Capello on a salary greater by far than any other manager there)get paid so much money?
They can see the skills of Messi and Ronaldo and understand why these guys are paid loadsamoney but how come ours earn so much from the gravy train that is English football?

As an earlier poster said I do hope that the fans boycott the Wembley friendly v Hungary as some kind of protest at the stadium that cost so much, took so long to build and has a playing surface worse than Rabsons Rec.
We are indirectly paying through the high admission prices and through Sky but the product isn't that good so it's time for fans to strike back and the boycott would be a good starting point.

One final point,the ball.
Whereas Rooney (and the others) seemed to have no idea of how to hit it towards the target what about Tevez last night for Argentina?
One even more final point apparently Rooney touched the ball 4 times in the German penalty area in the whole 90 minutes-something wrong there for a player meant to be our ace striker.

Had the delight of watching this in Edinburgh Airport, we pull up the in the bus, and the Air Traffic tower has a massive German flag on the side.... As it should happen, the Bar was full of Germans. Should be in line for a good atmosphere me thinks.... Far from it. Aggressive, angry Germans. One of them spat at my friend. My friend being a girl. From Edinburgh. God, I thought the English were bad when I went out to the Euros in 2004, but christ, half of them were on the pfucking shandies.I like the Germans, they're usually pretty cool, but this bunch of tards were something special...

Had the last laugh though, as their flight to Frankfurt got cancelled. Skillz!

Anyway, terrible game, terrible officiating, terrible atmosphere. TERRIBLE!

Maguire I actually don't think we were as bad as everyone is making out.

LOL at the hysteria though

Defensively I have never seen a worse England performance over the past 40 years.
However in one respect you are right. England could have scored 6. They scored two perfectly good goals, Lampard also hit the cross-bar and was unlucky when the keeper managed to deflect his shot away from a low cross. Defoe also hit the bar but was ruled off-side...I thought he was level with the last German defender and Gerrard had a good shot tipped away.
I also thought Klose fouled Upson with his arm up against Upson's neck.
So it wasn't all bad but the defending...jeez.

Just watched the BBC news at six with a clip of the England bus leaving their hotel. Right at the end one of our 'golden boys' (Rooney?) appears to stick two fingers up at the cameras as the bus passes.

Sums it all up for me. Arrogant bunch of under - achievers who treat the paying supporters with utter contempt.

The Prisoner http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8768122.stm

Great article about unrealistic expectation from England fans. I do think that some part of the problem is the corporate hype (be it from the FA, sponsors or papers). Lack of talent? Not sure. But pressure can squash talent (I know, we should be able to deal with it, but hard in the face of hysteria).

It was my daughter's 2nd birthday yesterday - we had arranged a party months in advance that clashed with the game. I watched the game on Sky + and ended up forwarding through the last 30 minutes or so. When I wrote a response on the previous page that seemed to strike a note with a few people I had come to the conclusion that I have lost touch with my national team. As soon as JT said he was bored I mentally abdicated and today I am finding that nobody is even talking about the game. If you are bored Mr Terry then so am I.

Do you actually know anyone who thought England would win?

The media keeps coming out with this bollocks about the absurdly high expectations of the fans, as if there are masses of them really believing it will be England's year, but I never seem to meet any of them.

It seems a lot of people seem to think people being interested in England's games means they must think England are going to win, as if you can't be interested unless winning in likely.
