World rankings

I can't wait to see how this has been calculated - our impressive performance at the World Cup has seen us move UP one place to 7th in the world rankings.

Can't think who else was around else in the rankings - France were toilet so may have lost ground. Who was previously 5th-10th?

I don't know if it works like tennis but France and Italy got to the fianl 4 years ago and didn't get past the group stages this time, that's got to hurt them

It's fairly simple but still too complicated to write about here. Essentially they take results from the last four years and assign points to them depending on whether you won, drew, or lost etc. Then they add multipliers depending on other factors like the region the opponent comes from, the strength of that opponent (based on their FIFA rank) and so on.

Obviously the rolling period of four years means that the 2006 WC has now expired - this forces Italy (winners) and Portugal (4th place) to slip several places.

England do actually gain some points over the previous set of rankings - drawing with the 14th and 30th placed sides [USA and Algeria] and beating the 25th placed side [Slovenia].

The biggest gain is Uruguay who jump from 16th to 6th.

Pretty much, except with a rolling weighting.

Also, failure to qualify for Euro 2008 might have less of an impact.

Portugal down 5, Italy down 6, Croatia and Russia also big fallers. France down 12 places.

France now ranked below Australia, and Italy below Chile, and all of them below Egypt.

2 African Nations wins in the last 3 years probably does it.

Thought it said we'd dropped to 13th on the front page of a red-top the other day.

Oh well.

Exactly. They win loads of games and whilst they might lose fractions of multipliers through the opponents being lowly ranked or from Africa, they still win loads of games.

Egypt only up three spaces this time, so a steady improvement; they overtook Italy, Croatia and Russia who were all big losers this time around (they beat Italy last year too).

(Do friendlies count?)

That means we were ranked 13th out of the 32 teams in the World Cup.

Like others have pointed out, rankings are relative. We didn't do as badly compared to 2006 as some teams around us (notably France, Portugal and Italy). Just wait till we qualify for Euro 2008 - we'll probably be top 5!

According to the link above, friendlies get a weighting of 1, World Cup a weighting of 4.

You are Marty McFly and I claim the DeLorean.

(Might you possibly have meant qualify for Euro 2012??)

I found that quite odd really; after all, we finished 2nd in the only Group that didn't get a last 16 winner, and losing by the biggest defeat in the round of 16; all of which rather implies we were the worst of the 16 teams to get to the last 16.... Who finished 14th, 15th and 16th?

From memory it was Slovakia, USA, and South Korea.

Certainly the former and latter.

Edit - it was Mexcio not the USA (didn't think that would make any sense seeign as they topped our group..)
