Depends.....if they had the same game time then we could comment but SWP only played a bit part and didn't really do anything "wrong" (although did nothing "right" either). Ashley Cole did have some good games but was part of the team that drew with USA, Algeria and lost to Germany so must be marked down for that

Are those ratings out of 1000?

SWP wasn't great by any stretch, but whenever he came on he attacked defences and caused them to worry. Sadly it rarely came off for him, which is par for the course for him. The good thing about SWP is you know he won't hide and he'll always have a go. The bad thing is he'll often fall over his own feet or run into a defender when trying.

Whereas Ashley Cole was part of a defence that was taken to the cleaners by the Germans and who was expected to do a lot of attacking yet did none (not necessarily through much fault of his own).

Emile Heskey also scores highly which isn't surprising seeing as he was generally one of England's best players on the pitch. His problem being he's a striker who can't score. He had very few genuinely bad moments, but did a superb job of winning and holding up or laying off the ball to retain possession. And he got a third ( ) of England's assists as well, playing in Gerrard against the USA.

The question for me, is how the oxf*rd did John Terry outscore Ashley Cole given his disastrous performance against German and general lack of quality at the tournament.

How are these stats calculated?

Anyway I see the Italian job has gone into one over the publication of these which, let's face it, are about as meaningful as any other set of stats i.e. zero!

In fact does anyone have any stats on how meaningful stats of this nature are?

Stats are useful for showing a trend, it's when people start to draw absolute conclusions from them that causes a problem.

So, England's players rated from between 5/10 to 6/10.

I'm not sure you can draw too many positives from that, tbh.

How can the press on one hand say that Cappello needs to get rid of all the players who have 'let down' England, then batter him for this index saying he will lose the respect of said players?

Half our problems would go away if the press were not such gutter feeding, clueless cnuts.

I recently read

Smoking Kills Dancing Doe Half our problems would go away if the British public learned how to form their own opinions and stopped reading and believing every single word of the gutter feeding, clueless press cnuts.
