You can buy shares in the club anyway.

But it's not worth buying football club shares except as a bit of fun. Invest elsewhere if you have spare cash.

I'd buy one RFC share if it became available and frame the certificate.

If you want to show your support, buy a scarf.

Football clubs are not a good investment so for that reason I'm out.

off someone who wants to sell...

They aren't publically listed so you can't go to a stockbroker and they rarely become available (and if they do JM tends to snap them up) but by word of mouth you do hear of them up for sale and i know people who have acquired them. STAR are one of the biggest shareholders I believe (rather skewed by the fact that JM owns 99% so you don;t need many to make the top 10 !

So realistically it is very hard to get shares, but it can be done.

There will never be a wider release of shares while JM is in charge.

JM could force everyone else to sell their shares to him if he wanted to. The next owner may well go down this route - it's what happened at Coventry recently.

So even if youfound someone willing to sell you might not be bale to hold on to the shares for long.

Really? How would a price be set for the shares you were forced to sell him?

I have never, in 25 years, heard by word of mouth about shares in RFC for sale

Maybe we could ask people that a reinterested in selling shares to post on HNA?

You're unlikely to bump into one on the high street I'll grant you but there are ways and means.

I forget the mechanism but maybe it's face or issue value - 50p or £5.

If someone owns 90%+ of the shares as JM does he can call the rest in and pay nominal value.

I suppose other shareholders can ask whatever price they like as the shares aren't traded on any open market. I could put one of mine on eBay!

I just don't get that - it effectively means any shares you buy are worthless (or at least cannot increase in value), so why would anyone buy any?

How so? Owning shares enables STAR to represent their members / fans generally in another way.

Holding shares allows STAR the opportunity to attend the formal AGM and ask formal questions of the company which would then be reported in the public domain. STAR or anyone else can't affect the outcome of the vote but they can make a point if they feel they need to.

These days football clubs are businesses first and foremost, and commercial considerations come before fans wants and needs.

Seems to me by STAR owning shares, they risk also having financial interest which could potentially be at odds with what the fans want.

It could be argued they would be better placed an independent voice of the supporters rather than a bed fellow of the board.

This situation of 97% ownership by one party hasn't always been the case. When the share ownership has been more balanced then a more competitive market may have led to increased share prices.

However, it's very unlikely that many people have made money out of shares in RFC. They buy them either for:

- sentimental reasons
- (in the past) seeking to gain control
- because the club have asked them to - in effect it's a donation but you do get a nice share certificate.

Presumably if the club was wound up and had assets (unlikely) then shareholders would be entitled to a % of the proceeds of the sale of the assets.

In short, investing in RFC is a mug's game as probably even JM would tell you.

You're basically saying JM is in a position where he can sell shares, then buy them back at any point for an amount he chooses.

Damn right that's a mugs game - and I'm amazed it's even legal.

Let's use an analogy - why don't people going into dragons den just buy back the shares from the dragons for a nominal fee once they've made their investment?

I just can't believe you've got the facts right here.
