ladies footy

by Chaney » 22 Aug 2010 19:33

Now I`m no expert of this but while browsing the beeb football results I noticed Reading royals won away at Barnet today in the womens premier league, on looking at the only league table available I noticed there was no sign of Arsenal and Everton who contested last seasons womens FA cup, so if there is a super womens league then why wasnt it listed?

The pertinent bit:
With the Super League due to begin early next year, all three Premier League divisions (National, Northern and Southern) have undergone a notable shift in personnel and with perennial champions Arsenal due to challenge for the Super League crown, a new name will be etched on the Premier League (National) trophy come the end of the season.

And detail on the new Super League...

And as importantly:
The following clubs have applied to be part of The FA Women’s Super League:

Arsenal Ladies FC, Barnet FC, Birmingham City Ladies FC, Bristol Academy Women’s FC, Chelsea Ladies FC, Colchester United Ladies FC, Doncaster Rovers Belles, Everton Ladies FC, Leeds Carnegie Ladies FC, Leicester City FC, OOH Lincoln Ladies, Liverpool, Millwall Lionesses FC, Newcastle United Women's FC, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland Women’s FC.

Leeds were one of the original clubs to be selected in the "Super League" however following the Leeds Metropolitan Uni chancellor spunking all the money they couldn't financially support the application anymore, so they are out for the forseeable. Shame as had a pretty decent squad at that level with likes of Sue Smith, Carla Cantrell etc.

Think ESPN will be covering the new super league over the season.

Nice to see the ambition at the club is just as prevalent in the women's game as it is the men's...

Most decent English players have gone to play in the US now. Funnily enough, they'd rather play in a league that pays them a living wage where they don't get patronized daily...
