Aggro at Reading

A football fan has complained about his rough treatment after being bitten by a police dog at Reading train station.

Tommy Meyers, 20, had been to the Madejski Stadium to see his team Crystal Palace take on the Royals on September 11. Police attended the station after the match because of reports of disorder.

It was there Mr Meyers said a police dog sank his teeth into his neck as he was lying on the ground following an alleged row with an officer from Thames Valley Police and British Transport Police.

The medical student from Bromley who is studying at Leeds University has been arrested for assaulting the two police officers and is currently on bail, but he said he was handcuffed and on the ground when the dog attacked, causing cuts across his neck where its teeth sank in.

Mr Meyers was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital for treatment and then given antibiotics which he claims the police refused to let him take while he was in custody.

He said the wound later became infected, almost killing him.

His case has been taken up by the Football Supporters Federation (FSF) which is appealing for witnesses to the incident in the station at around 7.30pm on the Saturday.

David Rose, FSF spokesman, said: “Mr Meyers contacted us after going to the match with his father.

“We have been looking into the case and are in talks to try and obtain the CCTV from the train station to see if there is any more evidence.

“He has no criminal convictions and he is not a football hooligan.

“The police are supposed to have the dogs muzzled and are supposed to be near enough to restrain them so I am not sure how this happened.”

BTP spokeswoman Emma Wiggins said: “Officers from BTP and TVP were called to reports of disorder at Reading railway station following the match between Reading and Crystal Palace.

“I can confirm that a 20-year-old man from the Bromley area was arrested on suspicion of assaulting two constables, one from BTP and one from TVP.

“The man, who sustained a bite from a police dog during the disturbance, was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital for treatment.

“He has been bailed to return until 6 October pending further enquiries. Anyone who wishes to provide any further information about this incident should call BTP on 0800 40 50 40.”

I'd heard that part of the problem was that quite a few Saints fans stopped off at Reading on their way back from Swindon and started fighting with the Palace fans.

There was no Southampton fans, a few Chelsea were drinking in the Oakford and it also kicked off there.

Even though he looks a oxf*rd, you can't allow a police dog to do that im afraid. Hopefully the police take a hit for that, charges of failiure to control their animals.

I know the FSF are involved in this one and reading on the Palace forums at the time, this seems to be the tip of the iceberg?

Why should they? The beef with the police isn’t whether he’s guilty or not.

The beef is the level of force used to make an arrest – that level of force should be appropriate and proportional to the threat posed.

And the police should use the appropriate level of force whether he’s guilty or innocent – which is what the courts are there to decide, not the police. So if he’s found guilty by a court he should face the proper penalty and I’m sure the FSF would support that.

But that’s an entirely different issue from what is in question here.

Because central to their statement is that he's not a hooligan and has no convictions, what if it turns out he is?

The fact that he has no convictions is a simple statement of fact - that's not in dispute by anyone. Whether he is a “hooligan” is down to the courts to decide.

So are you saying that if he’s aggressive to the police it’s suddenly become legitimate for them to set the dog onto him and baton him while he’s handcuffed?

It’s perfectly simple and it should apply to everyone, including football supporters - the level of force used should be appropriate and proportional to the threat posed to the police and to others.

How much threat can a pissed-up 20-year-old lying on the ground and handcuffed pose to anyone, let alone a police officer in riot gear with a baton and a police dog handler?

Just playing devils advocate really. This sort of thing never seems to happen to anyone with a string of convictions. I honestly couldn't care less really though and there were enough mouthy pcunts knocking around that day, if one of them got bitten, not overly bothered.

Usually those with a string on convictions don’t bother to come forward and fight for their rights – they take it on the chin and see it all as part of “the game.”

It’s a very easy attitude to adopt, but I’m sure we’ve all been mouthy pcunts at one time or another – and being a mouthy pcunt shouldn’t legitimise being put into hospital by the ones who are meant to be the good guys.

Odd - the story has disappeared from the EP server (searching for "Tommy Meyers" gives no results, too); and Dirk's picture doesn't load any more. What's going on?
