Can England Win the Next World Cup?

by Smoking Kills Dancing Doe » 04 Oct 2010 18:10

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... World_Cup/

Really great bit of work by the BBC and it really hit home what the problems are.

If we are ever going to be successful we need to completely change the attitude towards football in this country. How many times do you hear from the crowds 'get it forward' after more than a few sideways passes? The win at all costs nature of youth football. Jose said in Spain they teach you how to play, in England you learn how to win.

What was most interesting was comparing La Liga in the 80's to the Premiership. A league full of foreign coaches, foreign players and a national side that never performed.

Scudamore comes across as the devil incarnate, when squirming while trying to avoid questions about the Winter Break and fixture congestion.

Was almost choking up at Jose's speech at the end about us all having to be in it together. Too much money to be made for things to ever change though....

Good programme, and no we can't. We are light years away from winning a major championship.

Good programe but just confirmed what we already know. When Kevin Davies gets called in to the England squad it just shows how low we have sunk.

Is Davies, just what Klose would be if he was English and never given a chance at a top club?

Smoking Kills Dancing Doe Is Davies, just what Klose would be if he was English and never given a chance at a top club?

Um no just look at Klose goal to game ratio and if Davies was good enough he would off been given a chance at a big club! Not saying that Davies isn't a good player but he is miles of Klose.

Klose 409 appereances 165 goals = a goal every 2.47 games
Davies 600 appereances 160 goals = a goal every 3.75 games

I pointed this out on another thread a while ago.

Kevin Davies should of been called up a long time ago.

i very much doubt if there will be an "english" player in the "premier"league in years to come, given that "football" is now run by sky, sky, and nothing but sky.

Klose and Davies are about as similar as Danny Shittu and Franco Baresi.

Harsh! Both Klose and Davies are better than their reputations, but agreed that Davies isn't in Klose's league.

Interesting. There's a saying in the rowing world that could be adapted to this: you don't learn to win by rowing [playing]; you learn to row [play] by winning. Unfortunately, we neither know how to play nor win.

Didn't see this but the programme title made me lol. When people realise that the EPL is not the best league, England is no where near the best team and players like Frank Lampard not the best in the world then expectations will come down to realistic levels.

I wonder if Croatia would have a programme on with the same name.

Nothing against Davies he is a decent player, but could you imagine him being picked for Spain, Germany or Brazil?

Davies might not have the finest goalscoring record, but he created 81 scoring chances last season, the highest number by any striker in the Premier League.

Where are the Spanish, German or Brazilian strikers creating that number of goalscoring chances in the best league in the world?

I quite like Davies.

Fair enough he's probably not "England quality", but then again, who is?

I agree, this "Golden Generation" of World Class individuals has got us where exactly?

A team of players playing well together and battling for the cause > eleven world class individuals

So far I believe England's 'golden generation' has been going on for around 14 years. How much longer is that generation due to last?

Fair enough but can you define a scoring chance, for example is it a pass/cross that a player has got on the end off, or is it a cross/pass that hasn't made it to a teamate but ended up in a dangerous area?

I for one am glad to see him as he has done enough to earn a call up but it still shows the lack off depth england have in key areas.

soggy biscuit I wonder if Croatia would have a programme on with the same name.

I doubt it, I would suggest a programme by the name of 'Can Croatia Win the Next World Cup' would be more suitable but then that would be even more of a waste of time and money than our version.
