Forest Green's Lee Fowler admits to alcohol problem

Forest Green midfielder Lee Fowler has revealed he is an alcoholic and has completed a 28-day spell at Tony Adams' Sporting Chance clinic in Surrey.

The 27-year-old, who began his career at Coventry, is also currently out for eight to nine weeks with a knee injury.

"I'll always be an alcoholic, that's never going to go away," Fowler told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

"What I can do to stop me is the stuff I do daily. It's just trying to stop me taking that first drink."

Fowler, whose brother Mike also plays in central midfield for Rovers, is quick to thank the club for the support he has received at the New Lawn.

Manager Dave Hockaday has picked Fowler up from the treatment centre to take him to games and then driven him back afterwards.

But while he is currently getting help, the midfielder himself believes his problem has a long history.

"I think I was born an alcoholic, there's always been something there, my drinking got out of control when I was 19 with my career going downhill, I sort of knew then," he said.

"I asked for help and I thought that was my chance to do something about it, but it never really happened and then eight years later I hit rock bottom and that's when I thought the time was right and I needed to change my life."

Fair play to him i say

Does show that some people seem to have a disposition to be addicted - alcoholic by the age of 19 is going some.

But fair fvcks to the lad and good luck to him.

A small COLITO to Tony Adam's "Sporting Chance" clinic as well - is a naff pun really appropriate here?

There is a genetic link... quite a few genes, if faulty, can increase your likelihood of developing alcoholism. But there's a lot of environment involved as well.
