It's a bit early in the season for any figures to be meaningful, but I took a look anyway and found the following.

Average attendances for the division are down 6% on last season.
Reading are down 4.5% which is, I think, close to the median. The mean is dragged down somewhat by a few clubs doing much worse. The following caught my attention

Middlesbrough -8.5%
Ipswich -8.8%
Forest -8.9%
Derby -11.6%
Leicester -18.8%

Like I say though it's way too early to for thiose numbers to mean much, but we're centainly not doing any worse than the rest of the division so far.

The loss of Newcastle and (to a lesser extent) West Brom will skew the figures somewhat for the whole league.

I guess Palace will bring a few and some Reading folk might look forward to seeing Edgar Davids, so the attendance should be up near 19,000 to 20,000 for this one.

For the record this season should see the 5 millioneth attendee of a competitive Reading game since we moved to the Mad Stad - probably Doncaster or Cardiff at home.

Since moving we've averaged 16421 per league game (this drops to 15777 if you consider games across all competitions).

Biggest league attendance is the 24135 that saw us lose 2-0 to Man Utd in January 2008, the smallest league attendance is the 5393 that saw us beat Bury by the same score in 1999.

Biggest cup attendance is 24107 that saw us lose 1-0 to Chelsea in the League Cup in 2003, smallest is the 1561 hardy souls who braved the 1-0 Associate Members Cup win over Leyton Orient in 1999 (for those of you that still don't count the Associate Members Cup as being a competitive game, the lowest ever attendance is the 4337 that watched Leyton Orient (again!), this time in the League Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg in 2000)

Palace average since we moved is 17087, (lowest was 12743 for the 0-3 debacle in 2003, highest was 20441 for the 4-2 in 2008)

These figures are based on those recorded in the previous season section of this very site.

Reading have always been a small club, so 18,000 is pretty good.

5 home games in, last season those 5 games attracted 86,176, this season 81,752, so 4424 less in total. Current average is 16,350. Last seasons average 17,408.

ALso worth noting that the first 5 league games last season, diff teams, was 86,196 so a similar drop over the time period as the actual games comparison.
