Cardiff - Vandalism in the away end

by SLAMMED » 11 Nov 2010 19:01

Taken from the Cardiff forum:

Last night's trip to Reading was a decent one for most of the Cardiff City supporters amongst a travelling contingent of more than 3,000. We were given a large allocation of tickets, there were no travel restrictions placed upon us, we were well-treated by the Reading police and stewards, the bars were open before the match and during half-time, and there was no sign of any trouble between rival fans either before or after the game.

Sadly, however, it seems our club's name and our support's reputation has once again been dragged through the mud by a tiny minority of morons who are apparently incapable of behaving themselves properly at away matches.

In a communication to Cardiff City club officials this morning, Ray Booth, the Stadium Manager at Reading Football Club, has revealed that more than twenty seats in the away end at the Madejski Stadium were damaged during last night's game, while considerable damage was done to the gents toilets under the South Stand.

The reported wanton vandalism included several waste traps being kicked in, a couple of urinal cisterns being ripped off the walls, soil pipes being damaged and soap dispensers being destroyed.

I wondered why the floors in the toilets underneath Block R27 were swimming with water when I used them shortly before returning to our coach at the end of the match. Now I know the reason.

Whether people are prepared to admit it or not, the fact remains that this sort of idiotic behaviour is still a problem amongst our support. Incidents of genuine hooliganism involving fans fighting with rival fans are extremely rare these days but, unfortunately, acts of mindless vandalism seem to occur whenever our away following is larger than usual.

The people who suffer most as a result of what is pathetic behaviour by a small minority of brainless fools are those of us who support our team away from home on a regular basis. It is we who are often subjected to travel restrictions. It is we who are occasionally given reduced ticket allocations. And it is we who often cannot have a drink at away games because the home clubs close their bars for the duration of our vists.

No doubt the next time we play Reading away we will be given a reduced ticket allocation and the bars inside the ground will be shut. City supporters will moan and groan about being victimized and will question why the fans of other clubs are treated better than ours, but the reasons should be blatantly obvious to all but the most blinkered of Bluebirds.

Senseless vandalism like that which occurred at the Madejski Stadium last night really must be eradicted if this club of ours is going to make further progress. Sadly, there is still a minority of mindless cretins amongst our support who seem hell-bent on spoiling things for the rest of us and their idiotic actions continue to affect us all.

Most of you won't read it all, but oh well.

Just as well we did not win then if that's what they do when they draw. Perhaps Sir John bribed the linesman to give them a goal to save himself even more money repairing South Stand.

and rightly so their allocation should be limited. sadly it will have no effect until the likes of the F.A or the Football League decide to step in and say enough is enough, but we all know they are too busy trying to punish managers for resting players.

I mentioned this on the "atmosphere" thread and in fairness to the Cardiff fans on there they were very angry with the thugs that caused this. They are not all idiots.

You seem to have missed the point of this - it's aimed at the "a tiny minority of morons" that the majority are ashamed of.

Why should the majority suffer because of the actions of a few?

By Cardiff bringing their own stewards who could check out the toilets etc and make sure nothing is going on.

The way Cardiff have - they've put so much effort into getting rid of the real trouble-makers that it's newsworthy when this does happen, and the other supporters write items like this to point it out.

What are Cardiff stewards going to go in comparision with the stewards at Reading...in the toilets?

I can understand the decent Cardiff fans anger, one has even got this idea:

'Having read TLG's report it saddens me to hear we have gone from fighting to COWARDLY vandalism. Lets see if we can do our bit and I know there will be lots who will disagree with what I am trying to achieve. I will start off a fund with £100 towards the damage to the stadium. Please I ask for your support with this so we can show Reading and the football world we are not all total morons. If I am wrong please feel free to give your reasons why. I am just so disgusted with it all, I feel we must do something. shrug Our club should not be punished for a few mindless cowards.'

This happened last year they smashed up seats in the South stand. When Reading asked Cardiff to contribute to the damage there reply was it was our fault for letting them in. So that means we can go to there ground smash the toilets up as long as they let us in.

Unfortunately it's not a tiny minority. If 20 seats were damaged there must have been over 100 that saw the incident taking place plus all those that knew what was happening in the toilets. This must add up to in excess of 10% of those in attendance all of whom did nothing to stop or report it. No longer a tiny minority.

Althought why it wasn't picked up on the CCTV needs to be looked into.

How would you suggest the problem is dealt with then Svladers? And if you were RFC what restrictions would you put in place to make sure this doesn't happen again?

Since when does not taking action yourself make yourself as guilty as the actual perpetrators? We need more information before making such generalisations - when was this done, for instance?

And how many would know what happened in the toilets?? Only those there, which was probably a handful - and if a cistern was yanked off the wall that was in a cubicle - how many would have been in there?
