Watch out for those footballs!

by Gordons Cumming » 17 Nov 2010 09:25

One day someone is going to be seriously hurt during the pre match warm up.

The way Sal Bibbo hits those footballs and the wayward shooting of our players is going to end in a serious situation. Those balls are really travelling fast.

Putting a sign up warning people is not enough. If they insist on this practice ( and I'm not sure it's necessary ) they should put a big net up
protecting the supporters.

I saw a ball ( hit by Noel Hunt ) hit a safety office ( how ironic ), after a steward luckily duck  , right in the face.

What do other people think?

Saw some guy get knocked clean off his feet by one of Sal's shots at Fratton Park a few years ago, looked painful. Medics were on the scene and everything.

Not a lot you can do really except pay attention if you're in the firing line.

The club can do a little more to protect the fans.
Before the match not everyone is watching the pitch.
Do the goalkeepers and players need that sort of pre-match practice?

I don't think so............................

The strikers need shooting practice.

And we could practice our corners too.

Much the same at the 20/20 cricket, and i even saw someone get clonked on the head at the golf the other day. This an issue easily avoided by not sitting behind the goal or actually watching what is going on - this is not a new thing its beeen happening for years! - would you like a steward to help you cross the roads? I cant believe the thinking of some people these days, the nanny state has stopped people from taking responsibility for themselves. Who would have known.... flying footballs at a football match

LOL @ Worrying about getting hit by a ball. It's people like this (the health & safety brigade) that will mean we'll probably be watching football from behind thin netting in years to come.

I agree it is a football match and you must accept that a ball will fly into the crowd at times.

It is just the ferocity of the shots heading in that direction at that particular time before the game. It isn't really necessary for a player to warm up that way.

It wouldn't take much to put a net up pre-match. I don't expect them to have it up during the game.

Before a game your eyes aren't fixed on the pitch always. You may be reading a programme, talking with a friend, just walking up the vomitary with a cuppa in your hand................

Don't sit behind the goal? Ok We'll ask the whole of the North & South stands to move!

Mark my words someone will get seriously hurt..........................

Is this about something that happens before 3pm? If so, why would anyone be in the firing line?

Heard on the grapevine that Gerard Lavin's been called in as a consultant regarding extra-pitchside spherical trajectory velocity at the Madejski.

Could be a load of balls, however.

They do have nexts either side of the goals during the warm up so I'm not sure what the fuss is about here.

Away ganmes in the 90s were brilliant as the players deliberately kicked the ball into the away end so the supporters could have a good laugh.

Not last Saturday.
The practice goal was moved to the left with only one net to the side of it.

You'll make a fuss if you get a mouth full of ball while you're sipping your hot cuppa.
