Mr Angry I was speaking to a Liverpool fan last night in the bar of the hotel I'm staying at as we watched the game; I said that Hodgson needed time to turn Liverpool around as he had inherited so many average players - the guy said "he has already had enough time and wasted millions".

Just

Fans who voice those sort of opinions really get what they deserve.

I've heard much the same when I speak to Liverpool fans, and I mean proper ones that go to Anfield, not just watch it on TV. It's bizarre isn't it!

I wonder if they'd say the same for Reading fans who won't have a bad word said about Coppell though?

That would be a mental appointment. They need someone who has top level success behind him, a Martin Jol or a Martin O'Neil would be ideal, but Pardew is an odd choice. He did a good job with West Ham. It only went wrong when the Icelandic's took over and started making decisions behind his back, but he still doesn't have a record to suggest he's the big name Newcastle crave. What a club that is!

Mike Ashley must be stark raving bonkers.

I can just about understand getting shot of Hughton because, willing to admit it or not, we all know that he is a guy who is never going to make a top PL manager; but to replace him with another one of the same pedigree (only with stronger evidence) is extremely weird and guaranteed to attract outright condemnation, if not mass hysteria, from the fans.

Still, I'm sure we all wish him luck.... :|

To say they're not happy is a bit of an understatement! They're already talking about protests and wanting him out and because of that it'd be a daft appointment whoever it was.

Megson at Bolton, and Allardyce at Newcastle to an extent, show that the manager has to fit the club and be accepted by the fans as well as have the right credentials and skills for the job. That's even more the case at a club like Newcastle where the fans are so vocal and fickle.

Personally I think Pardew is a good manager and, given the right circumstances, could do a good job up there. It's unlikely that is going to happen though.

The BBC report..

Alan Pardew is set to be named as the new Newcastle manager within the next 24 hours, BBC Sport understands.

The former Reading, West Ham, Charlton and Southampton boss was among the favourites to take over from Chris Hughton, who was sacked on Monday.

Hughton led Newcastle into the top flight last season but following his dismissal the club said it wanted someone "with more experience".

Pardew, 49, has been out of work since being sacked by Southampton in August.

BBC Sport understands that Pardew was in talks with Newcastle about taking over at St James' Park as long as 10 days ago.
It is believed Pardew became close friends with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and director Derek Llambias when all three were familiar faces at an exclusive London casino where Llambias was managing director. Reserve team boss and ex-Magpies striker Peter Beardsley is currently in charge of first team affairs at the club.

Just

I mean, who would have thought that Pardew could behave in such an underhand manner.......oh.

If that's true, in fact even if it's not but the story is out there, then he'll have no chance winning over the Toon Army who are spitting feathers over the decision to sack Hughton.

RR, how do we 'know' Hughton will never make a top PL manager?

Reading's current boss is making an ok fist of things, having spent much his career as a coach and scout. Hughton was primarily a coach, but you can't really argue with his record as a manager, securing easy promotion last season, and making a good start to this with an average squad.

Far too early to make a judgement on what level Hughton will be at in five years, unless taking the Mike Ashley school of thinking, which appears to be 'if I throw enough money at the right people we can do a Man City/Chelsea', albeit without any idea who those right people are.

I can't see Hughton being a top manager either. He just doesn't seem to be made of the right stuff.

He's done a pretty decent job at Newcastle of course, and plenty have failed before him, but realistically, and despite all the talk during last summer, Newcastle had a squad far too good for the majority of last seasons Championship. Getting momentum from winning last season and doing well for the first half of a Premiership season is quite easy (as plenty of sides have shown over the years) but going the step further is a different story. Of course Hughton might've been able to do that, but my gut feel is that he isn't going to be as good a manager as someone like O'Neil, Hodgson, Redknapp, Allardyce or Hughes which is the kind of level Newcastle demand as a minimum (as in they think they should be challenging top 4).

From here it was a stupid decision to sack Hughton, even more of a slap in the face that Pardew's in the frame.

Hope he 'rapes' them.

Poll on Echo website asks who should be next Newcastle manager:
Hughton 71%
O'Neill 12%
Jol 9%
Beardsley 4%
Pardew 4%

Neil Warnock / Aidy Boothroyd / Tony Mowbray immediately spring to mind.

At least Pardew managed to keep West Ham up in the PL for a season before he got the sack....

And got them to the FA Cup final.

I'm presuming this is what Ashley's aiming for. It can't be anything else.

TBH I'm in agreement with RR, Houghton is without doubt an excellent number 2, but his tactics relied on lumping it up to Carroll and hoping for the best. They were utterly woeful against WBA last weekend.

However, replacing him with Pardew is just
