The Germans disagree with you it seems, voting him Footballer of the Year with a record percentage of the vote. According to wiki he was also nominated for Champions League best midfielder, the Ballon D'Or, FIFA Puskas Award and the FIFPro World XI squad. And now this UEFA team of the year.
He finished last season with 16 league goals in 24 appearances (23 in 37 overall) which suggests he was far from anonymous.
He must be doing something right, but I'd still pick Ronaldo ahead of him (I'd have Robben on the other wing though..)
