MLS Manager Says C'Ship Not as Good

Smith: MLS better than Eng. Championship

It’s an often-quoted opinion that MLS is a similar level to the English Championship, a notch below the Premier League.

But Colorado Rapids head coach Gary Smith has been taking in some games while back in his native England and he, for one, is not so sure the comparison is a valid one.

Last weekend, Smith went to Coventry in the English Midlands to watch the home team in a 1-0 winning effort against Middlesbrough, not because he was necessarily scouting for any talent to possibly play in Colorado next season, but rather to check the pulse of the English game.

“It’s always interesting to see these games,” Smith told MLSsoccer.com by phone. “I have to say, Coventry were absolutely dreadful. If they played like that in the MLS, they would be lambasted. It was route-one 1982 football.”

Smith said he was confident his Rapids team would beat Coventry “seven times out of 10.”

“It is a sad indictment of the Championship,” he said. “Coventry are a very big, physical side – and there are always issues with that – and played with confidence. [But] Middlesbrough played much better football.”

Coventry are currently fifth in the Championship table and pushing for promotion to the EPL, while Middlesbrough are at the bottom end of the table and fighting against relegation. 'Boro were a Premiership team as recently as last year.

Well that article certainly isn't the respective manager lambvasting the division is it, more like Coventry's style of play. To be fair anybody would need to watch a lot more games to be able to form a judgement of the Division in comparison to the MLS. I for one would never compare the Championship to any league that I hadn't seen around 15-20 games across the respective division anyway. As if Coventry City v Middlesbrough is a benchmark for this division anyway, Coventry are somewhat unique in their style of play in this division for a start.

I agree - the headline doesn't really match with what Smith is saying. The range of styles of play up and down the Championship is really different. I remember thinking how fast the play was when I actually got to see a match live.

readingbedding MLS manager is talking bollocks.

It might have just been a shit game. As said above, the manager didn't actually make the claim stated. That's just the headline. His complaint was also about the style rather than ability.

That said, I do think MLS is very underrated in general in England, mainly through lazy journalists stating that it's about conference standard, played in front of tiny crowds.

Anyone using a team managed by Aidy Boothroyd as a benchmark for English football needs a firm kick up the arse

Benchmark for the Championship

Considering he took Watford up and has taken a dogshit Coventry team to 5th, I think the Americans have a point about the standard of this divison

Watching the dogs breakfast that will be served up later today at the Mad Stad will futher enhance the point.

They call it Soccer, therefore it is not better. end of.

The Championship is no doubt the most unpredictable league in the world, meaning the most exciting, you only have to look at our second half of the season last year!

He made no comment at all about the standard of the division, just the style of play.

It's an English word, not an American one. Besides, nobody seems to complain about SKY's use of the word with Soccer AM etc.

"In the world?" You've compared its unpredictability to a lot of other leagues I take it?

Exactly, it was his comment that "I have to say, Coventry were absolutely dreadful. If they played like that in the MLS, they would be lambasted. It was route-one 1982 football." that prompted me to post.

Route one is played by very few clubs in the top 2 tiers and Aidy Boothroyd is an arch exponent of it, hence it is unfair to use Coventry as a benchmark for how football is played in this country.

Judging by Coventry's approach to Saturday's game, he's pretty spot on with the 1982 route one football, however it is very effective and I'd be surprised if Rapids actually manage to beat them that easily.

MLS play through the summer - that's a massive limiting factor.

I think the Championship is right up there.

Anyone can win the league, and anyone can beat anyone.
