Beer in half-litre plastic glasses?

by EPR » 29 Dec 2010 12:56

Anybody else spot this a couple of weeks ago - I saw a few people in the East stand drinking what obviously weren't pints, but looked way bigger than a half. When somebody left an empty I did an experiment and they were definitely half-litre.

Presumably a cock-up, but it got me thinking; it would actually be a great quantity to serve beer in at the ground. I tend to arrive only 15 minutes or so before KO and after queuing for a beer it can be a bit tight to get it down in time whilst enjoying it at the same time; and likewise at half time, I always find it too rushed to enjoy a whole pint.

A half is too small, couple of sips and it's gone, but a half-litre would be ideal!

Is a half-litre a legal quantity of beer in this country? It definitely is elsewhere in Europe.

Well, it's just a can of beer isn't it..

A pint is 568ml - Half a litre is 500ml.

So they are probably selling beer, but only 500ml, but people might htink they are pints..

Unless it was made very clear that people were only getting 500ml and not a pint (don't the ads in the concourse specify a pint e.g. a 'pie and a pint'?) then the caterers could find themselves in a lot of trouble with trading standards if they are reported/caught doing this.

I am interested to know what they are charging. I would take a guess that a price rise was sneaked in.

This is RFC here, folk won't complain, and some will say it is a good idea, which actually it sort of is, but not if they are saying that it is a pint. Time we ditched the pint and went for large small beers, large being 500ml and small 300ml, IMHO

Why not, most cans and bottles are metric, we go abroad and it is not problem, cant see that it matters.

It's all about keeping a sense of identity and not following the masses. Being the only European country that uses the imperial measurement as standard is a part of that. Much like keeping the pound is to many people. And for that reason, I'm IN. No European shepherding for me, nosirree.

Correct. It all started going wrong when we ditched pounds shillings and pence if you ask me.

Maybe it''s psychological but 500ml never seems quite enough if you're just having the one drink. Keep the pint.

But, as you say, that is two drinks! Furthermore how logical is a metric system that has a 'half' measure that is more than half of the full one!

The single measurement for shorts changed back in the 90s from 1/6 gill to 25ml, so there is a precedent.

Citeh have, or about to, introduce a two pint plastic glass to cut down on congestion on the concourses at half time.

Only problem for me would be having some sort of "eazee pee" system that allowed me to expel a lot of urine without leaving my seat.

Perhaps a second 2-pint glass and a catheter tube?
