Always annoyed me a little that pundits & commentators don't make more of an effort with foreign team names. I don't expect them to try and put huge flair onto it but some of them are obvious but still pronounced in the way someone from the north would when booking a package holiday there.

We all know it is pronounced 'Valen-thia' so stop staying 'Vanel-see-a' mr pundit.

in general that doesn't hugely annoy me, it's jsut the way it reads in English. Also, why do we call Bruges Bruges and not Brugge bearing in mind it's the heart of Flanders

one thing that really annoys me is José Mourinho pronounced the spanish way

We don't say Liverpool FC, so why say AC Milan?

We say AFC Wimbledon.

We no doubt say AC Milan to distinguish them from Inter, but that doesn't make calling them AC Milan wrong. A quick look at the official site makes it clear they refer to themselves that way. A lot of foreign clubs are very hot on using the full initials and year of formation etc.

Wrong would be HJK Helsinki, when the H actually stands for Helsinki.


Apparently the Germans are very bad for translating the names of foreign teams in German, so Milan are Mailand there. They also insist of adding the city, so Arsenal are Arsenal London.

Welsh channel S4C goes a step futher, and their Saturday afternoon vidiprinter rejects English club names and uses the Welsh equivalent instead, making it look like the English leagues have been overrun by Welsh villages, so you have Gateshead 0 Caerfrog 1 coming up as a score.

The latter is the English way of pronouncing the city, so that one sort of makes sense. Nobody (English) says Valenthia. Saying Sevilla the English way, as if it has two Ls in it, is silly though.

Well, yes, but the point is we don't call Napoli "Naples" or Torino "Turin".

We do have the odd club we translate, such as Bayern Munich, but they rename every club.

The equivalent of using the names Liverpool and Everton is to call the two teams who play at the San Siro, Milan and Inter, and that was what When Saturday Comes said you had to call them about 20 years ago when I formed my opinion. Therefore, anything just seems wrong to me.

On the other hand, I don't think we should make any effort to pronounce the names of foreign players with foreign intonation or accents: we are not going to get the name right, so we shouldn't even bother. The players wouldn't be able to pronounce my name right, so why should I try to get theirs right.

Well that's partly because FC wouldn't be of any use to that end as all clubs are FC (or AFC) here. FC effectively becomes redundant when talking about English clubs. That's not true in Italy though. They are not all AC.

As I said, "Inter Milan" is wrong, but AC Milan is fine. the club might commonly be referred to as Milan in Italy, but adding the AC is no different to calling Schalke "Schalke 04". It's a little fussy, but not wrong.

On the other hand, I don't think we should make any effort to pronounce the names of foreign players with foreign intonation or accents: we are not going to get the name right, so we shouldn't even bother. The players wouldn't be able to pronounce my name right, so why should I try to get theirs right.

Sorry, but that's just total ignorance, but if you want to go round talking about what a great player we have in Jimmy Keeb, but wish we had a defender with the quality of Dariuszzz Wadowszeek like we did in the nineties, be my guest.

In Italy its always "Milan v Inter" but Inter Milan is just short for their full name FC Internazionale Milano. No different to Man Utd or Spurs really. But you wouldnt catch an Inter fan using the word Milan in the English spelling. and theres Wolves who live by their nickname.
