TBM The completion of Fernando Torres and David Luiz to Chelsea, plus the arrival at Liverpool of Andy Carroll, take this window's transfer spending to something like £214m

Recession, what recession.

With Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll signed, this means Liverpool have Lou and Andy up front... 'Yeah I know'.

I can't make sense of today's merry-go-round. Where's the sense in commiting to these sorts of sums? How can that money ever be recouped and what happens in Roman or the new Liverpool owners get bored?

Eek

Interesting twitter posts (I know) from the editor of World Soccer, Gavin Hamilton -

"Biggest deal in Spain: Elias, Corinthians/Atletico, £6m...Germany: Luiz Gustavo (Hoff'm/Bayern £12m)...biggest in Italy: Pazzini (Samp/Inter, £11m + Biabiany), Ranocchia (Genoa/Inter £10.7m)... France: Rod Fanni (Rennes/Marseille, £3.25m) biggest in Russia: Ibricic (Hajduk to Lok Mos, £4.2m)...Turkey: Bogdan Stancu (Steaua/Gala, £4.75m)..."

Nice to compare that to the English clubs' activity today.

People are (rightly) going on about 35M for Carroll but what about 50M for someone who's not been good for some time? (the fact that most of that time he was throwing his manager under the bus notwithstanding) At least it ensures he won't score against Chelsea on sunday I suppose.

At least Torress has a proven track record - despite his Shane Long style prolonged dip in form. He's still scored 62 goals in 105 appearances for Liverpool which, considering the changes they've gone through in the last few years is nothing short of staggering.

Andy Carroll? 11 goals in 19 Premiership appearances this season. Currently injured. Is known to have issues off the pitch. There's potential there and, perhaps, he will genuinely be a great player.

I would be so bold as to venture that if Carroll is worth £35 million then Torres is worth considerably more than the £50 million Chelsea payed for him.

I'm not saying Carroll is correctly priced, just think Liverpool might not have made such a giant rick here

Carroll + Suarez >~ Torres

There's not much in it, is there?

SF may have a point.

As with all these things - time will tell.

FTR I think Chelsea have the better of the deals and Liverpool have made a knee-jerk purchase they may come to regret in the future. We shall see.

Torres, Torres, he kisses the badge on his chest, then puts in a transfer request, Torres, Torres.......

Will Roman make a move for Gerrard in the Summer?

For £35m Liverpool could have signed someone like Van Persie and knowing Wenger he would accept that.

Agreed. After all Tevez never kissed the badge while at United.

I expect this has been mentioned, but how the mighty have falled - Sidwell goes for £500k.

It's not the done thing to slag off your own players - even at Chelsea.

Arsenal have signed an entire team for less than £35m.

£35m for Carroll ranks as just about the worst transfer deal i have ever known. 2nd only to £500k for Sean Evers.

Massive LOL an Ian Dowie last night " This deal for me will see Liverpool clinch that 4th CL spot this season". Tool.

It seems rather a lot but it's reassuring to read Ideal's posts.

Ideal If you had £35 million as a club, and you wanted to sign just one player.
Why go and sign this complete idiot Carroll?

To be fair, if Carroll scores more than seven times the amount of goals that Javier Hernandez does over the next few years this may prove to be very shrewd business...
