Great career he had.

Scary thing is being old enough to remember a 'promising youngster' retiring.

Lucky to be around at a time when there has been (and still is)so little competition for his position and the same goes for Ashley Cole at left-back.
A nasty bit of work and good riddance.

Best English right-back? I don't know - let's take a look at his highlights. 3:20 and 5:40 of this, for example.

I watched England quite a bit in the 90's and early 00's. Ask any England from that period who went to games they will tell you he was England's most consistant and commited player, wore the three lions with as much pride and passion as Stuart Pearce. And was a bloody good right back for me England's best in that position. Can't say I liked the bloke but I would have him in my team any day.

Bit harsh. Just watch Germany's second goal against England in the last World cup and the laughable attempts at defending by Glenn Johnson. Even Phil Neville would have done better.

To be fair, he was the most consistent English right back for 10-12 years (or however long it was). Absolute pillock but fair play.

There's a tad of difference between "England's best right-back" (Ever?) and "better than Glenn [sic] Johnson.
