but if they can't play together, then why try to play them together?

That goes back to their reputations.

Beyond Lampard and Gerrard (next 2 or 3 years for England), Wilshere could truly become a great England midfielder. All we need is the effective development of Rodwell and we could have a very good midfield, as those 2 would complement each other well.

papereyes Not every reply is a criticism, even on here!

Oh! It was the minimalist reply that left me a little confused...

As for why they've stuck with both Lampard and Gerrard, I think it's basically because they are/were our two best midfielders and perform so well week in week out for their club sides.

Sure, it's easy to sit here and realise they don't play well together but it would've been a mouth watering prospect if they actually did. I think they also didn't have much in the way of outstanding alternatives and then every now and again one or the other would have a good game.

Lampard had a good Euro 2004, Gerrard has been one of our better players recently. They've both shown enough flashes to deceive us that it can work between them, but ultimately it's one conundrum we've never solved and I'll be glad to see the back of it after 2012.

As mentioned above, Rodwell and Wilshere should be the future in there and they would complement each other more naturally.

McEachran will be in the senior squad soon I reckon.

I'm not sure on Rodwell as a midfielder yet. He looks the part but the game just seems to go on around him a little bit at the moment.

I still think he might be a centre half in the long term, but then I agreed with Brian Clough about Roy Keane at a similar point in his career.

Lampard had a good Euro 2004,

At the expense of the far more able Scholes. Set English football back about 5 years that.

That is what I have always seen as the issue. in footballing terms Gerrard & Lampard have always seemed to me to not be particularly intelligent.

Gerrard = run fast directly forward with ball, flap arms to get ball, try to play 'hollywood' pass, look miserable all the time.

Lampard = run slowly without ball, flap arms to get ball, shoot everytime you are within 30 yards of goal, when 1 in 20 shots go in (via defelction) pump arms to 'super Franky Lampard' song

There are many critiscisms you can aim at Fwank.

Being thick however, is not one of them.

Stevie strikes me as playing like a 5-year-old. Running always toward the ball, shooting on sight and absolutely zero sense of teamwork.

Being intelligent academically and being intelligent in a certain area (i.e sport) are 2 quite different things. Rooney being a great example.
