As I think mentioned later it's not a loophole - this ruling says that every seller of progarmmes has equal status across the EU, and one can't define a signle county as "theirs" - so yes, I'm inclined to agree that they end result will be sales to a single European broadcaster. Whether that can happen quickly or easily remains to be seen, though.

I think, though, that the size of the total package will go down - the size of the UK cheque is so much bigger that this is likely to go down and the increase from across Europe won't make up the shortfall. Only time will tell, though.

As to the sbscribers, Sky may be doing well in terms of domestic subscribers, but their prices for pubs are now so high that many are leaving them and extortionate and many are leaving them :

@Wimb

After a meeting i was at today, i agree that the most likley outsome if this judgement is upheld will be the PL selling a single European contract - or possibly pan-european language contracts (e.g. 1 company can broadcast in English, 1 in French etc).

Isn't that kind of the point though. SKY want people watchng through subscriptions rather than free in the pub?

It's not entirely free, the landlord in the pub would be wanting you to buy a drink or else....

No, Sky want the pub business just as much as the domestic business - because the subs are so much higher.

Not sure that's quite true though Dirk. They certainly don't want to lose the pub business but their mainly a consumer business and it's the homeowners who they sell all their other products too.

I'm sure those within Sky who own and promote the pub business would say differently but they're pretty much at saturation point (or were at least) in that market so there isn't much room for growth. Skys business is all about the consumers and the pubs is just a nice little earner on the side.
