Wycombe Wanderers vs Egg chasing

by St Pauli » 21 Feb 2011 23:37

Bit of background on the conflict between Chairboys and the owner who wants to put them in a Wasps stadium.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 403966.stm

There was an article in WSC about this a while back, and in the not to far off future this could be an issue for Reading.

I hate egg chasing for a number of reasons but this is just takes the piss.

I can't see how this could also be us in a few years. LI are tennants at the Madejski Stadium, but there's a lot more to it at between Wycombe and Wasps.

It clearly says the stadium would be council owned, the rent would go to the council and not Wasps.

It is quite obvious why there is a proposed move separate from any Football/Rugby issue. The Chairman has identified that although a stadium is an 'asset', its not something you can use to borrow money and presents a real cost of maintenance and potential huge cost should something need doing. He therefore has suggested a move to a council owned stadium and to pay rent, removing the aforementioned costs and risks.

I can sympathise with the football fans' worry over losing history etc but don't think this is anything like a Wasps attempt at a coup of any sorts.

Spot on. Wasps and Wycombe are basically owned by the same megalomaniac. And with LI's crowd average well below RFC's I cannot see LI driving any daft ideas of stadium expansion.

I agree with Tails and to add to that, Wasps are on the slide anyway; never been a big club and lucked out with a golden generation of players led by Dallaglio. wouldn't be surprised if their average crowd drops below Wycombe's soon.

It got them in the league though. Crowds more or less doubled after they moved. If they'd stayed they'd quite probably have been a Woking type club.

I did like Loakes Park though.

I liked it too, and certainly moving to Adams Park has been a factor in their recent successes. Nevertheless, Loakes Park had a history (the earliest known photo of a wmoen's football match was taken at Loakes Park, for example) and a character which Adams Park could / can never aspire to.

Hmm. Reminds me of another club.

reminds me of a lot of clubs who find it more financially viable to take the money and move to an out-of-town site rather than redevelop. that's life, get over it.

A few years ago their "Founders' Trust" - a body going back years who had some special "Enshrined Rights" in the way the club was run and a veto on moving, winding up, etc - voted way those rights in return for promises of investment and expansion.

Guess what? - The investment and expansion never appeared.

Did they get that in writing and was it legally binding? If not then they were clearly naive and a bit foolish.

No they didn't and no it wasn't - and yes, they were massively naive and foolish, just like so many sets of supporters have been before and probably will be afterwards.

And having Martin O'Neill as manager helped. I liked Loakes Park which in some ways was similar to the original Huish down at Yeovil inasmuch as both grounds had obscene touchline to touchline slopes. Also worth noting that both clubs are now secure within the FL. Sometimes heritage and tradition has to make way for progress as neither of the old grounds would have ever been accepted into the FL either before or after re-election was the norm.
