Does the guy in that shout "vvankers" about 50 seconds into that first video?

Went to Hertha against Energie Cottbus tonight, drew 2-2 with all the goals in the first half, never been so cold in my life!

Yeah a lot of St Pauli fans speak English and adopt English insults because they visit a lot of English clubs and a lot of English fans visit St Pauli. There's also the Celtic connection, you can actually see a Celtic/St Pauli scarf in the vid. I got an appreciative laugh from a large section of the St Pauli south stand when in English shouted 'your not fit to referee ref get off the oxf*rd pitch' despite the fact that after 6 or so pints I covered the lad in front of me with flem.

Saw St Pauli play and beat Hertha 4:3 after a great comeback in the cup in 2005/06. Victory made sweeter by the fact that the Hertha fans had shot numerous flares and fireworks into the Home end. Which prompted the chant 'Berlin, Berlin, we're gonna shit on Berlin' a simple but suitable variation of the German cup chant Berlin, Berlin we're heading to Berlin.

I have to say I'm incredibly hard with all this talk of German men getting a bit minstrel.

You'd love it in Germany and Hamburg then, German football in some respects is a little backward in that hooliganism is more common then in the UK, but I'd say thats as much to do with tickets prices as anything else.

Also St Pauli has an excellent record when dealing with homophobia in the stands! :D

Really? I go to 20-30 games a year in Germany and the first real hooliganism I have witnessed (personally) was last Friday when Eintracht Frankfurt fans didn't take their 3-0 away to Nürnberg all that well, and decided to throw stones at the police. And there is history between those two clubs. Maybe there is a lot of hooliganism in Germany but I have travelled away with FCN (& second-tier Greuther Fürth) on more than one occasion (and FCN are not generally popular) and never had any problems at all.

Maybe its the league (regional 3) or st pauli then, because in one season I experienced more trouble then in all the time i've folllowed Reading.

@ home
-Fireworks from Hertha
-Riots after chemnitz
-attempt by HSV fans to take the home end (all be it St Paulis version of the West Stand) at the St Pauli HSV II game.

away
-had bottles and full beer cans thrown at us at a station en route to a game.
-Guy hospitalised by Erfurt fans at a station requiring an air ambulance
-my mate got coined away at essen.

And st pauli isn't even much of a hooligan club, though it always seems to kick off against Rostock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-bAc47Xpvg

Which isn't even that bad compared to dresden: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7TkPpdtVL0

It looks to me as though a lot of the trouble you have run into has had something to do with teams from the east of Germany - something I had not (admittedly) thought about. And St. Pauli is a red rag to a (right-wing) bull - understood. And Rostock? Everyone hates Rostock.

I think it's less a east/west thing more right/left thing, eg. get on great with Carl Zeiss Jena or SV Babelsburg (east), real issues with VFB Lubeck (west). There are a fair few nutters in a lot of the East clubs though, as theres just a lot of nuts in the East. Also think a lot of Nazis who don't normally go to football or support other clubs will go to anyone playing FCSP on a given weekend. And you're right about everyone hating Rostock.

What a brilliant article. Looks like I will be having to make plans to arrange a visit in the near future.
