Why was the south stand open today?

I assume it was tickets assigned to local schools children, presumably some sort of discount. They should do it for the rest of the season seeing as there is usually no one sat in there anyway, just a bit of extra income.

They should open it to anyone.

There were several coaches (from Oxford!) unloading a bunch of newbie looking mums and toddlers/teenagers at the corner of the North/East stands. I heard more squeaky-chants coming from the North than usual as well.

I suppose at least it means we don't have to suffer "your grounds too big for you" every game.

The kids got their highlight of the day that made the whole journey worthwhile for them - counting down the last 10 seconds of each half.

I think it's a great idea. I think back to when I was little and first taken to watch a game from the Southbank and the noise, the atmosphere, the game itself, I was hooked for life. How many of those kids that went today and saw us score 5 goals will share a similar memory and be future life long fans?

I'd like us to reach out more to the schools, offering cheap tickets, and even be cheeky and stretch out to the surrounding areas.

Spot on. I think we kept the swearing down to a minimum for them.

My first two Reading games were with Beavers and a School trip with the footy team. Got me hooked.

No pleasing some people. Credit to the Club for doing something positive. Guess this puts them in the running for Family Club of the Year again.

I remember back in the 1970's when the old Reading used to allocate so many free tickets to schools each week. The schools either gave them away carte blanche or gave them as awards for sporting achievements etc etc

Helped to get me hooked

There were some rather excitable kids from a Dublin football team in the North Stand.

Serviced suitably by Noel Hunt, Shane Long and Ian Harte with autographs.

It's what got my dad hooked as well, there is plenty of room in the ground, they really should do it.

They are bound to make money on the catering if nothing else and if the experience is good it's creating a whole raft of future fans.

They can't do too many offers as it'll possibly stop parents/kids buying full price tickets or coming when there isn't an offer but I do think it's a good move by the club to go out and drum up as much interest as possible.

We all have to start somewhere, and what better way than to get a load of kids in together.

It was quite amusing to hear them raving about such a big crowd on the radio though.

Not only that but it would piss off ST holders. And we all know how militant they can be.
