Liverpool Sponsor Advises Club

by Stuka » 01 Apr 2011 11:38

Liverpool's sponsor wants the club to sign Asian stars to help tap into commercial opportunities in the region.

Standard Chartered sponsorship chief Gavin Laws cited Manchester United's signing of Park Ji-sung as an example of connecting with the Asian market.

"The real power Liverpool could do for us, and for the Premier League, is if there was a way they could nurture foreign players from Asia," said Laws.

"The Kenny magic is all around the world, everybody believes Kenny can take the club [forward] and that means they stay focused and that means they stay in the newspapers around the world... we are looking for brand awareness."

Hilairous that a sponsor thinks it is in a position to advise a football club like this. If clubs were to sign players soley on their backgrounds just for commerical reasons, they'd go down quicker than a Thai hooker on a five dollar long time.

A few years ago Everton played a match early on a Sunday morning to suit their sponsor's requirements for it to be shown in their local timezone.

Let's be honest, as far as any Premier League boardroom is concerned, money >>>>>>>>>>>>> football.

Oh absolutly, but surely they must realise by now that if it's not sustainable they'll have neither.

Very few people care about sustainability - it's all about short-termism, thinking about this season only.

Teams have been doing exactly this for a while haven't they? Only in this case it's the sponsor suggesting it rather than Peter kenyon, or whoever is in charge of a clubs "global brand"

Wasn't that when they played Man City and they both had Chinese players?

I think so - it was Chang (Chinese beer) that was behind it all.

To be fair, this sounds like the sponsor pointing out the potential of signing an Asian player, not telling them to go out and do it.

Any Reading fan should know that signing a player from overseas has a massive boost in terms of appeal and fan interest. We had plenty of extra interest from Asia and the US following the signins of Hahnemann, Convey and Soel.

Nice theory, except that Chang is a Thai beer, not Chinese. Chang means elephant in Thai. Everyone in Thailand supports Liverpool or Man Utd anyway.

Yeah but those players were signed on their own merit not because Kyocera or whoever it was told them too. Funily enough I heard a rumour Soel was sold to Fulham because of their Korean shirt sponsor of the time, LG.

People also suggested that Kyocera were behind us signing Soel, even though Kyocera is Japanese, not Korean, and the two countries intensely dislike each other.

SKY dictate nearly all live tv kick-off times. Their sister channel STAR TV broadcasts sports in Asia, and is a big driver behind Man Utd getting so many 12:45 slots.

I wonder if Waitrose had any say in that green and white away strip? I'm sure it was chosen purely for aesthetic reasons.

But nowhere in that article is the sponsor suggesting they just sign a player, specific or in general terms, from Asia. All they do is say it would be a massive boost to their support in that region if they did.

It's a total non-story.
