Wayne Rooney could face an FA charge after millions of viewers heard the Manchester United swearing directly into a television camera during Saturday's match at West Ham.

Rooney uttered an audible expletive following the completion of his hat-trick at Upton Park, which helped United come from 2-0 down to win 4-2.

The England international seemed to shout: "F****** what. What? F*** you."

The lunchtime Premier League game was beamed around the world and Rooney's outburst prompted an on-air apology from the broadcasters. The FA have confirmed they would examine footage of the incident but it was unclear what action, if any, they would take.

"We will look at it," a spokesman told Press Association Sport. "We obviously don't condone foul and abusive language."

It is understood taking action over a player swearing at a camera during a game may be unprecedented.

But there does appear to be provision for sanction in the FA's own rules about behaviour, which state: "A participant shall at all times act in the best interests of the game and shall not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour."

Rooney has said sorry for the incident saying in a statement released by the club: "I want to apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my goal celebration, especially any parents or children that were watching. Emotions were running high and on reflection my heat-of-the-moment reaction was inappropriate. It was not aimed at anyone in particular."

I find the media's butter wouldn't melt unsubtle provocations with players and managers far more offensive than Rooney swearing when he's just won a game Utd had been losing.

Only seen the incident on YouTube and was baffled at who his abuse was directed at. Are people saying it is the cameraman ? Definitely sounded more personal than his usual foul mouthed tirades.

Although clearly this wasn't directed at a referee I think Wazza might struggle if they ever really enforced a respect campaign which of course they never will. There is so much anger inside him for some reason.

Of course fines don't work - not when no-neck mongs get paid £250k a week. It is quite simple really. One way to cut out the lack of respect and blatant cheating and the like is to ban the players for something like 10 games. The owners of clubs would soon issue guidelines to players and managers etc to make sure they spend more time on the pitch than off it. After all, they will expect a return from their investment. Will it happen? Will it oxf*rd! And all because the football authorities are so scared of the PL clubs.
