I hope you're wrong RR, but I have a funny feeling you might be right.

Moving in the summer could go either way for him. A fresh start might get rid of the demons, or it might just unsettle him more and add to his woes.

Royal Rother His best days are behind him and he is inexorably heading towards Gascoigne territory. Expect the injuries and absences to start getting more frequent now.

It'll be interesting to see whether Fergie gives him one more year or cashes in this summer. He would probably still command a £45m fee and Man Utd could do plenty with that I'm sure.

The main difference between Rooney and Gazza is that Rooney's not an alcoholic though, that's been Gazza's biggest problem.

He would probably benefit by getting away from the spotlight in the UK so a move to Italy or Spain might be good, except I'd imagine the chances of him embracing the culture and learning the language range from infinitesimally small to non-existent.

Off topic but would there be a different reaction to this story had the 2 sportspeople invovled been footballers?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... arges.html

On topic:

Rooney was wrong but is anyone surprised as such and he isn't the first and won't be the last?

Facing a 2 match ban it seems now.

It would make much bigger headlines I'm sure. That's the rprice footballers pay for the money and celebrity they attract I guess. Rightly or wrongly the two go hand in hand these days.

Royal Rother I could just about accept it if he was shouting "Fcuking get in there, fcuk yeah!!!!!" with joy on his face, but he wasn't - he was snarling a message of hatred / abuse at someone, something. That cannot be allowed to go unpunished because it really does set a terrible example.

I agree there is a difference, but not sure where you can draw a line to define and consistently punish such offences.

I think Fergie and the powers that be at United need to address the issues causing Rooneys outburst and his up and down form this season. I think that's a bigger worry really.

I still wouldn't be surprised to see Rooney leave in the summer.

I also heard on the radio the suggestion that Fergie needs to sit down and talk to him.
This is the same Fergie who will not talk to the BBC,the same Fergie who disses referees and the same Fergie currently serving a touchline ban for his poor behaviour.

A chavvy player.

Two other points:-
Drogba got a 6-match ban so Shrek should get something similar.
Sky coughs up much of the money earned by Rooney & Co and therefore are almost in the role of employer.
They sack 2 long-serving employees for casual sexist remarks off-air and not heard by the general public, will they do anything about their (almost)employee swearing into their camera?
The guy has previous from the world cup (unlike Drogba) so he really should get a ban but I expect a fine which presumably just goes into the coffers of the FA when at least it could fund some anger management classes in Manchester.

who are ya?
paultheroyal Nobody, but nobody should defend Rooney over this.

Camera pitchside or not. He took it on himself to move to the camera, gesticulate to the camera and then shout obscenities at the camera. Sadly as always his brain never clicks in time and just shows what a vile individual this man is. Great footballer, no human brain. Book will be thrown at him.

Absolute cock. I think it's great, fair play to him, if his actions upset you then you are a top cnut.

LOL

Perhaps both can have a stern chat with each other or Rooney can become a lifetime president for Tourette's Action. :|

Drogba got his ban from UEFA. On reflection, Drogba's outburst was more understandable considering the high stakes involved and the perceived injustice from what was a very strange refereeing performance. Rooney? Well, if he does not know the words to "Happy Birthday", HTF will he cope learning a new language? He is hardly fluent in English after all.

Because Drogba also confronted the referee, jabbed his finger at his face, shouted abuse and, finally, had to be restrained by security guards and team-mates as the referee walked down the tunnel.

Uefa banned him for four matches but although Drogba’s piece de resistance was his rant into the camera, he was banned for his behaviour towards the referee.

The bottom line is that Rooney has upset the people who really hold the power in the Premier League - Sky TV.

I can just see them sitting down for the next round of negotiations for TV contracts (which start in August this year) and saying "Mr Scudamore - because of the behaviour of your players we can't be sure we can safely broadcast live matches on a Saturday lunchtime to a family audience ....."

Agreed that it's quite different to the Drogba incident, but still a very stupid thing to do.

It's a stitch up from that City fella on the FA. Richards swears on camera - nothing, Rooney does in an England shirt - nothing, suddenly a semi around the corner and swearing carries a ban. Berbatov and Hernandez will shit on City anyway. Am I allowed to say that?

That'll be the company that pay a man to rush over to goal celebrations with his handycam to ensure they get it all, then through their various platforms show the "best" clebrations over and over again?

Agreed. Especially as this is the FA banning Rooney not the PL in any case.

But just to reference to point re: SKY, they don't care. Bottom line is they need the PL as much as the PL needs them. They both know this, which is why the domestic TV rights deals only go up by small increments (if at all) during each negotiation.

PL are making all their growth in TV revenue from overseas markets. And again the competition for rights is so high this will make zero difference to any negotiation.

Rooney was just unlucky / stupid enough to do this right in the middle of all this discussion about "respect", so the FA have no choice but to ban and make an example of him.

I would imagine they start with a 2 match ban, united appeal and ends up with 1 match ban job done move on.
