.....on whether you'll be going to more or fewer matches next season - should only take literally a minute to complete :

Shouldn't that be more or less matches?

I'd tick the fewer box not the less box.

Just done it. What are they possibly hoping to get out of this?

Just information on whether the "football bug" is losing its power because of high ticket prices and the recession - get comparisons between increasing/decreasing numbers at all the clubs and compare against all their prices.

Right.

I guessed it was just so Virgin Money could do a press release saying "30% of football supporters are planning to attend fewer games this season" and they advertise some wonderful financial services product that would make it more affordable for people, although I am what you could reasonably call a cynic.

It's not that far from that - but the hope is that the clubs which see lots of people not renewing will take a look at the pricing and react accordingly - and hopefully the whole of football will too.

Well I imagine all clubs reckon on a certain level of "churn" every season. Do they measure if that goes up or down year on year? You bet they do.

Clubs will probably also look at the number of season tickets they're selling, and how full their own ground is every week, before looking at the results of an internet survey.

Sorry don't mean to be overly negative or critical - but I can't really see the value of it but I think it's the virgin money thing that's got my goat.

Agreed, it's very quick and dirty - but it's better than nothing and if Virgin Money are prepared to use their resources to name and shame some clubs and alert them that they have a problem name then why not cooperate?

I'd find it a little difficult to go to fewer next season. I've had an awful attendence record this year. Fewer than half the games I'd normally go to..

I've hardly bothered this season. I've gone from never missing a home game for 15 years, to moving to Leeds and still not missing home games and instead increasing my away game intake, to moving back to Reading and hardly going. I just fell out of love with the game after the way so many of our players changed after promotion to the Premier League, and how some like Shorey let us down when he wanted out but had to wait one more season. Money has ruined this game, and for the first time I got to see it at first hand.

But McDermott has all but created a new team, generated a new-found team spirit, and I feel connected once again to this team. Now I want to go again every week, and I'm punching the air as the scores come in again, and that feeling has been creeping back throughout the season (not because of this remarkable run of form).

Last weekend at my sister-in-laws wedding reception, the best man started his speech with "Before I begin, let's not forget that there are important issues taking place elsewhere in the world... Sunderland 0 Birmingham 1 (HT) Reading 2 Leicester 0 (HT)... I clenched a fist and shouted "Get in" before  realising that was a little passionate and inappropriate before it got a few laughs. But there was the passion again. I haven't had it for a couple of seasons and it's good to have it back.

Next season I'll go to most the home games again and a handful of away games, and take one of my daughters each time as they too now like going.

I'd have liked to have seen a question that actually asked why I was likely to be attending less games as opposed to directing me to say it was because of the money.

Personally I've become less fanatical about my football because of player and club behaviour and nothing to do with the financial cost. I know the FSF obviously have an agenda with the survey but in my mind (as someone who has commissioned a reasonable amount of research in the past) it would've been better to ask why and not just direct the target to a outcome you want.

Would be interested to see a glimpse of the outcomes though.

What a truly rubbish survey. Clearly just an attempt to increase the mailing list and numbers of signatories on the petition.

Anyway, where was the option for "Do you plan to attend fewer matches next season because you think your club will not be playing as many games"?

THere is a link at the top to exit the survey so that you don't need to enter your details (which is is what I did. I get enough spam as it is).
