Great English Clubs

by Barry the bird boggler » 12 May 2011 10:32

Only 2 clubs - Liverpool and Manchester United - can be called greats in the English game. These are the only two clubs that have continually won things down the years at both National and European levels and both have a massive followings stretching all over the world

All other clubs are just wannabes that will never get close.

Discuss.

The only thing that lets Arsenal down, is in Europe but in the English game they are up there with the likes of Utd and Liverpool - thats for sure

I think that the definition given by the OP is incorrect in some respects - 'greatness' is a subjective description. You kind of know it when you see it - it is all about the history, the fans, the ground, great players etc.

For example Aston Villa aren't great and probably neither is Chelski

If this is a serious thread, rather than a wind-up (which I suspect it is) then greatness is a definition borne of the times you are in; for example, in the 1930's Huddersfield would have been seen by everyone as a "great" team, in the 1950's (when Liverpool were a mediocre 2nd Division team) Wolves and Arsenal would have been seen as "greats".

They were a football league side once between 1921 and 1923....resigned as they couldn't attract enough fans  They actually came 11th in 1923 and resigned!

No mention of Gainsborough Trinity, Glossop North End, New Brighton Tower and Ashlington in this thread either

Well said Mr A but don't you know anything? Football was only invented with the advent of the Premier League.

I said to myself don't read the post because it will be something gh3y and pathetically boring about Arsenal but I folded too easily and now here I am, looking about as shocked as Neil Lennon opening another death threat...

So if Reading get promoted, finish 4th and then win the Champions League does that make us a greater club than Arsenal despite 120+ years or utter mediocrity, far fewer trophies and a far smaller fanbase?

Will it make us a greater club than Harchester United?
